Hi,
Anybody know anythink about RegRun Security Suite? It seems to be a very comprehensive tool for "non experts" to clean up sticky spyware in register and block new stuff from getting added, but I can't find any reviews on line. Also, I understand that it run from Russia. Without intending to sound prejudiced, does this raise any concerns regarding legitimacy?
Thanks,
LBarrett

I haven't used that particular program, but did want to respond to your question about being from Russia. There's some good software coming out of Russia. Check out System Safety Monitor some time.

Here's another:

Like any software, research it out as much as possible before you install. You can get good stuff or garbage from anywhere. I have no problems with software from overseas or Russia. More of the software I use comes from other countries than from here. While domestic companies might dominate in size and wealth, that doesn't apply to quality.

Its probably one of the best security apps you can buy in my opinion , there are a ton of features , and there isnt much that it cant do ... its good if you want almost complete control over what goes on in your computer .

I've been using it for a year or so , with each update a litle bit more gets added to it .. Very Happy

Heres one review on an older version of Regrun gold , 10 out of 10..
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/regrungold.html

It's also one of the best in the registry monitors comparison thread at wilders :
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=32823

One of the Regrun forums is at at Net-Integration:
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?s=&showforum=35

Outpost Firewall is also russian made .. Razz

Read a software review not so long ago (forget where) and the reviewer was re-assuring readers that, although it was made in Europe, it was quite OK. Seemed bizarre.

This thread made me think how world-wide the anti-malware effort is:

Outpost – Russia (thanks, Moore, never knew that before)
Kaspersky – Russia
NOD32 – Czech?
Ad-Aware- mmmmmmmm – don’t want to offend anyone by getting it wrong
TDS3 – Australian
Trojan Hunter – Swedish
Ewido – German?
a2 – Austrian?

The AV firm MS bought – Romanian??

Outside of anti-malware, well,

Opera – Norway

Sure the list must be far longer (and feel free to correct me on above)

SpyBot- Germany
AAW- Sweden/Norway
HJT- India?

Just an observation. The ones listed so far cover the best and best known products. Notice one particular "hi-tek" country not listed?

Quote:
NOD32's "ancestors" were born around the time the first computer viruses appeared. At that time an extremely popular TV series was being broadcast on Czechoslovak Television ... a series which was later translated into many other languages and became known in many other countries. The name of this TV series was "Nemocnica na Okraji Mesta" ... in English, "Hospital at the Edge of the City". The first viruses attacked disk boot sectors, which are located at the edge of a disk. An antivirus program could in a sense be considered a hospital ... "nemocnica" in the Slovak and Czech languages. We decided to name the newly created antivirus program “Nemocnica na Okraji Disku” ... which in English would read “Hospital at the Edge of the Disk”.

We originally called our program "enn oh dee" ... the name by which it became well known and respected in Eastern European IT circles ... but thanks to worldwide expansion over the past couple of years the program is now almost universally referred to as "nod" ... in fact, some English language reviewers have "given the nod to NOD", and one of the nicknames given to our Australian partner by the VX (virus underground) is "Noddy Roddy".

Just bought Regrun standard edition after trialling it for a week. Have to say "WOW". It's fantastic. It's got so many features and gives you so much control it's unreal. I'm now in the process of upgrading it to the gold edition. Funny that it costs $5 less to buy the standard edition with the upgrade to gold. I asked the developer about this and he confirmed that a discount is applied for existing customers. So you can buy the full gold version for $49.95 or buy the standard for $19.95 + upgrade to gold for $24.95 which is a total of $44.90. I thought i'd try out the standard edition first. But i'm so impressed, i've decided to upgrade to the gold edition.

Take a look yourself at the features it has.

I was thinking USA, but now that you mention it, I don't see any real entries from any of those. So often you hear about spam, spyware, etc coming from overseas sources, but nobody seems to notice that the solutions and tools for addressing these problems also come from overseas, along with many of the best of the more conventional programs. It's very interesting that these countries, which represent a very large percentage of the computers in use, and rely heavily on them, offer very little in the way of software to address these problems. It almost points to a connection between Capitalism and adware/malware/spyware.
Not a political statement. Just an observation.

The USA blazes the way in, the rest of the world cleans up the mess afterwards?

Not a political statement, just an observation! (HONEST!) Well, OK, I'm jus' trying to be vibrant.

If there's a link between capitalism and crap... I think it's not quite so blatant, more along the lines of:

"Let's sell as many pc's as we possibly can, extoll ALL the possible virutes - but for goodness sake, don't mention MS & internet insecurity"

Can you imagine a newbie going in to a shop and being told they'd have to install... what... f/w, AV, anti-adware/spyware (pref x3), blah, blah, blah... then keep checking for updates and bewary of new viruses, etc.

On top of that, your brand new pc won't be all that safe on the net while you download what you need, and the availability of most stuff on CD is limited.

Not really a strong selling point, most ordinary folks probably wouldn't buy if they knew the score. Wonder who benefits by this lack of information and awareness?

Think you've said it before, Rick, and it's a point made by Deb on her CARMA blog - why aren't the necessary freebies bundled with new pc's?

Obviously you seem to have misread the topic, or maybe you think you are posting in a forum that specialises in technological advance levels of the nation's of the world? Either way, your posts having nothing whatsoever to do with the topic of this thread. The poster did ask about the legitimacy of Regrun. All very interesting what you are saying but simply nothing to do with the question asked.

Thanks for pointing that out to me, muf, just seems to be the way things go, you know, one thing leads to another, an' all that. Don't let it bother you too much.

It's not that it's worrying me CWW. I hope i didn't come across as a little heavy handed. It's just that very little of this thread addresses the question that has been asked by the original thread starter. I was a little concerned the thread was going in the wrong direction and had effectively been 'hijacked'. And yes, it's easily done. One thing leads to another. I know how it is. Wink Just thought i'd be the first one to open my big mouth and say something.

Cheers,
muf

Hey muf, guess I did hijack it, just seemed to follow on. Doesn't stop anyone else getting it back on track, as your post proved.

Mmmm, just been watching Pirates of the Caribbean... maybe I should change my name to Cap'n Jack Sparrow, or Dick Turpin?

Er... just going off track... is that Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham.... ex FWM? Whatever happened to them? Cool.

Edit: Just WTF's a manalishi? Never did find out.

It's probably a bit too late, and will contribute to the derailing, but FBMSoftware (makers of ZeroSpyware) is a joint US-Philippines initiative, with the development occuring here in Manila and the marketing/finance happening in the US.

RegRun is a great app - been using it since way back Smile
This thread reminds me that I must re-install it to
my new hard drive. Very configurable though still with
the odd bug. A MUST HAVE app in my view, it saved my
butt a number of times.

NOD32 is Slovak antivirus. ESET started in 1992 when it was Czechoslovakia, so since 1993 it is Czech republic, and Slovak republic (two countries). ESET has HQ in Bratislava, capital of SVK. Here is link http://www.orsr.sk/vypis.asp?ID=5994&SID=2&P=1 on the business register in slovak, where are also all owners written Smile

A bit off topic, but does anyone here use Registry Mechanic? I used it for awhile, not sure if it really helped, and it disabled one or two wanted pieces of software, which I had to reinstall.

Are there any good, free registry cleaners?
