Posted: Thu Nov 18, 2004 2:06 pm Post subject: Browser difficulties in IE6 after XP SP2 update(RESOLVED) |
|
|
I have been unable to link to sites when browsing since XP SP2 update. This after I recovered my XP Home Edition because of problems 2 weeks ago. I ended up with ipv6 on my computer when SP2 was reinstalled. Have been trying to research and work with Microsoft Support Groups both IE6 and XP Networking. They have walked me through uninstall of ipv6 and I have also done ping tests. One ping test to www.yahoo.com and one to 66.94.230.33. Both ping tests functioned properly, but when I put them in my address box and tried to access them, I was able to access www.yahoo.com but not the 66.94.230.33. I am working with a linksys wireless g router on road runner cable modem and my computer has a linksys PCI G adapter. The other computer in the house is directly connected to the router. So far nothing I have done has worked. I did have a trojan on my computer months ago and worked through it (with help) using spybot, hijack this and a number of other spyware/anti-virus programs. When I recovered my computer in the last two weeks, I ended up with two computer administrator accounts (I did the recover incorrectly). I don't know if that is causing any of the problems I am having. I am attaching a HiJack This log as suggested by the techs at the Microsoft Support groups. I am also attaching the last ipconfig /all report. I tried to check the vulnerability of my computer using the link on your new user page, but was unable to access it. One of the specific problems that I can explain is that I can get to kellys-korner website (in my favorites) and move to some of the links within the site. However, I cannot link to the Tweaks link. Any help you can give would be appreciated.

I'm sorry this is so long, but I am trying to provide you with as much information as I can. I did run a spybot scan and came up with DSO Exploit but it is hung up on creating new system restore point.

Welcome to Spyware Warrior forums.
Below you will find my results and recommendations. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.
Depending on which version of Incredimail you have, it can cause a great number of troubles. It seems as tho the free version is highly ustabel, and is noted for its system crashes and over all instability. The paid version, apparently functions fine. If its the latter, ignore all related fixes please.
Please go to Add/Remove, and if found, uninstall the following:
Incredimail
Viewpoint
Please go to 'Task Manager' and 'End Task' on the following process(es):
C:\DOCUME~1\Debbie\LOCALS~1\Temp\bwgo0000b835.exe
Please look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

I did everything as you instructed. Had some problems using the index.dat Suite so I just went in to each Temp Folder and deleted everything I could. Now when I start my computer, SpyBot comes up with changes to registry and I am not sure whether to accept changes or not, so I shut SpyBot down until I am sure that I should be accepting the changes. Sorry for my inexperience with this. I have not tried to access any websites yet. I thought I had deleted the Incredimail because I found out it caused problems, guess I didn't get it all. I appreciate all the help I can get. One other question, is there any way to delete a second administrator account in XP. When I did a recovery, I ended up with a second administrator account. I am not sure if that could be causing some of these problems or not. Thank you for your assistance and expertise with this problem.
Here is the new HiJackThis Log.

| Now when I start my computer, SpyBot comes up with changes to registry and I am not sure whether to accept changes or not, so I shut SpyBot down until I am sure that I should be accepting the changes. Sorry for my inexperience with this |
No, this is completely my fault, as I should havbe told you to uninstall Spybot for this fix. Simply turning off the TeaTimer is not enough. TeaTimer will prevent any changes to the registry, which is what we do with HJT. Thusly, everything I asked to be fixed, is still there.
So, please run the fix again, with Spybot, completely uninstalled. We will add it again, once your cleaned up. _________________

Sorry for overlooking your repost. .
We only have one bit of malaware.
Please go to 'Task Manager' and 'End Task' on the following process(es):
C:\DOCUME~1\DEBORA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\bwgo0004c0a1.exe
Reboot, into 'Safe mode', and search for, then delete, if found, the following files/folders:
C:\DOCUME~1\DEBORA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp<<<entire contents of this folder
To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.
Post a new HJT log please.
Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder
The app below will help with temp files

Good Morning,
I used the index.dat Suite as suggested. Ran into problems with 2 index files in Temp folders that it could not delete. I ended up going into search temp and deleting everything (I hope) through each folder. I did not find the bwgo0004c0a1.exe in my Task Manager, but I did find it in one of the temp folders and I deleted it. I keep finding different bwgo processes on my Task Manager. Is this a process that should be running? Thank you for all of your help with this. I appreciate your time and effort very much.

No, this is not a valid file, any process with those beginning letters needs to be killed and deleted.
Give it another shot, as you can see, there was one running when you ran HJT .
As a matter of fact, just do a file search for 'bwgo' and see what you find. Check the properties of each one, before you delete it. But I'm fairly certain they will all be bad.
And be sure you have enabled hidden files and folders to be searched. _________________

Found a few bwgo files and deleted all. Once again I deleted all TIF files as well before running this log. But I still have one showing up. Don't know where it came from. When I go looking, I can't even find the C:\DOCUME~1 folder, so I just keep trying to find them everywhere I know where to look. Tried to download and run the IESPYAD that is recommended but when I try to install it the window goes blinking. Once again, thanks for all your help.

OK, first off here is a IE-SPYAD Tutorial.
Secondly, you need to look in this folder for that file:
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp<<--this folder.
That is where it lis located.
Also, be positive that you have enabled the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
Let me know how that goes, and be sure to first stop the process in task manager, before you try to delete it. _________________

Here's the latest HJT log. I think it looks pretty clean. I did find a folder on my computer called RECYCLER. I don't know if this should be there or not. It isn't something I downloaded, but it may be part of one of the programs that I need. Is it something I should be concerned with? Thanks.

This is a normal MS system folder. No worries there.
Lets do this with the seemingly invincable 'bwgo' related processes, which seem to keep popping up.
Reboot, into 'Safe mode', run HJT, and then, click the 'Config' button, then the 'Misc. Tools. button, then select the 'Open Process manager' button, scroll down til you see:
C:\DOCUME~1\DEBORA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\bwgo00016de0.exe , then click the 'Kill process' button, answer 'Yes' to kill the process, back out of HJT control panel, and then seach for, and delete:
C:\DOCUME~1\DEBORA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\bwgo00016de0.exe <<<--this file
**Note:The process above may have a slightly different name, but will begin with 'bwgo'.
Then, go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp<<--this folder.
And be sure it is comepletely empty.
Reboot, post a new log. _________________

Was unable to find the process in the HJT Process Manager. I think it is part of a Mahjong game that I had on my computer. I went through all temp folders and deleted everything except desktop config which said it would interfere with my computer's operation if deleted. Also ran a search for bwgo files and deleted all that showed up. Emptied Recycle Bin (all in Safe Mode). This is the new log after reboot. Thank you for all of your quick responses. It has made working with this so much easier and a lot less frustrating.

Emptied Recycle Bin (all in Safe Mode) |
Ok, it can't b part of a game you had. Because if the game is gone, why is it still running? Its there in your log, plain as day.
For the desktop config, right clcik the file, select properties, tell me the info contained in all the tabs.
There has to be a process running with that file, its been there every single time you have posted a log. If its in the log, its running, or HJT would not record it presence.
Next time you run HJT, check the process manager for that process, and, then check your task manager too. One of them has to have it running. _________________

Ran the HJT scan in Safe Mode, went to Config, Misc Tools, Open Process Manager ... Nothing. Ran Task Manager and again Nothing. Finally found process in HJT by running HJT in regular mode. It shows up in both HJT and Task Manager. I have not killed the process yet as I am unsure of damage to my computer if I kill process in regular mode.

OK, we need to kill that process, and then, search for and delete that file.
Do it all in normal mode, and after you delete, reboot , and see if the process loads again.
And that folder is fine, you can leave it alone. _________________

Also, way back in your first post, you said you had 2 admin accounts.
I would like you to clarify that. Do you have to accounts labled as 'Administrator', or, do you have 2 accounts with administarator priviledges? And can you give us the names attached to each account, do not include user last namse tho. _________________

I have tried to kill the process in HJT but have not succeeded. I ran HJT in both the Debbie account and the Admin account and killed the process in both. Did a search in both accounts and deleted and emptied Recycle Bin and TIF. To no avail. I am posting both logs for your review.
I have noticed two other things. I have a folder found.000 that showed up in my C:\ folder with nothing in it. Second is that every time I reboot the bwgo comes up with different numbers.
I have two separate administrator accounts on my computer. When I did a recovery of XP a few weeks ago, I did something wrong and ended up with two accounts. One is named Administrator with a sub account "Debbie" that has all priviledges. When I tried to do the recovery, I ended up with a second administrator account named Admin "DEBORAH...". I think there may be a conflict with the two accounts, but no matter how much I have researched this and tried to find a solution, I have found nothing to help.

OK, reboot your pc into normal mode, and be sure that process with the bwgo is running. Do this on the primary user account, whichever one that is.
Also, does 'Deborah' also have the same priviledges as Debbie?
Then please DL Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the drop down menu next to the yellow triangle scroll until you see :
bwgo00014fdf.exe
Select it on the list.
Click the yellow triangle and click yes that you want to end task
In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:
C:\DOCUME~1\Debbie\LOCALS~1\Temp\bwgo00014fdf.exe
Next, click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". Click the button with the red circle with a white X in it. Close killbox.
Reboot, let me know how that went. _________________

Followed your instrustions with KillBox and am posting new HJT log showing the process is still there. As for the DEBORAH account, it is the name given the new administrator account when I recovered XP so it has full administrator access but under the new computer account when I re-registered and I can't seem to change it in any way. The only difference is that I have not transferred the Debbie account to the new administrator account because I am not sure how to do it. So the Debbie account has full administrator capabilities in the old Administrator computer account and the DEBORAH account is the new Administrator computer account. I hope I am explaining this clearly.
I have tried to figure out what the bwgo properties are or anything else that would be of help but am coming up empty. The bwgo files seem to change numbers with every reboot. Sorry I am not more of a help with this.
Here is the HJT log:

Just found some information on bwgo*.exe files being part of BackWeb. I have never heard of it but did a search on bwgo in my search engine and was directed to F-Secure. Here is the website that says it is part of an anti-virus removal software. http://support.f-secure.com/enu/corporate/supportissue/av5/usage/usage-issue-2003011500.shtml
I have never been to this site before. Hope this make some sense and is a help to you. |

| One more thing I just found and am not sure what to do with it. I just ran an msconfig on my computer and found under the Startup tab in System Configuration Utility - BackWeb - C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Programs\BackWeb-8876480.exe. I have a Logitech Wireless Mouse and Keyboard. I do not know what the Desktop Messenger is and I do not know what will happen if I uncheck this item in the Startup. Hope this information will provide some answers. |

Funny thing, I was just going to tell you to look in MSCONFIG, as I found a thread via Google which said it could be there.
As you don't know what it is, that Desktop Messenger, then you don't need it. I would go to Add\Remove, and uninstall it.
That should solve this dilemma we have been having.
Let me know what you decide, and the outcome.
I notice your not running any form of anti virus detection, nor a firewall. If you want to ensure you keep your machine clean and free of intruders and trojans/worms/viruses, get one of these, they come highly recommended, and are free!
AVG Anti Virus
I also don't see a firewall, please get one right away. Zone Alarm is one of the most popular, its free and easy to use.
XP SP2 firewall is not good enough. _________________

Thank you so much for all of your help with this problem. I am now able to link to websites without problems. I was unable to find the Desktop Messenger in my Add/Remove Programs, but I did disable it in Start up on msconfig. I have also downloaded both recommended sites to my computer so I now have an anti-virus and a firewall that are operating. I did have both anti-virus and firewall (Norton) prior to these problems but lost them in the recovery process. I was unable to reinstall Norton due to some part of it being left on my computer that I still have not found.
Many, many thanks for the time and effort you put into this problem. It is being followed by the Microsoft Support Center as well since they suggested I try this site for resolution. I really appreciate all effort given to me in this. |

Great, glad we finally got things figured out. Thankas for the kind words.
And why don't you try the Norton Forums for the items you can't seem to find. It would be ashame not to have what you paid for, maybe they can help.
We have 2 more things to do, to help ensure you have removed all the little 'leftovers' which may be hiding:
Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder
The app below will help with temp files
Index.dat Suite
This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.
Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid coonfusion.
Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation
Now that you have regained control of your machine, lets keep it clean. Please follow the links below to ensure the highest possible level of protection against any further invasions. The links and the apps are some of the most highly regarded apps in the field of security/protection & detection. Run AdAware & Spybot at least once a week, depending on your surfing habits.
Spybot Search & Destroy v 1.3
Ad-Aware SE
With AdAware and Spybot: DL, check for updates, then scan, repair/remove/quarantine anything found. Reboot before next scan with whichever app is next.
Spyware Blaster & Spyware Guard
Both of these apps prevent installation of nasties and are proactive.
With Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, just DL, check for updates, enable protection, and your done!
Check my site via the link below for more tips regarding security and ad/mal/spyware. The apps listed above are just a START, there is always more that can, and SHOULD be done. Tutorials for many can be found on my site as well.
Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

Hello Again,
I have done all you suggested with Ad-Aware, Spybot, emptying TIF, recycle bin in both accounts that show up when I sign on. This first HJT log is for the new Admin account. I will post the HJT log for the Debbie account in the next post. I would really be interested in learning how to read these logs and be of assistance to someone like me in the future. Thank you again for all of your help.

Here is the log from the Debbie account. I still haven't figured out how to get rid of the second administrator account. I guess that will be something to strive for next.

AAAACKKK!!!!
That process!!!!
But we should be able to clean it up without the troubles we had before, since we know where it cmes from now.
Please go to 'Task Manager' and 'End Task' on the following process(es):
C:\DOCUME~1\Debbie\LOCALS~1\Temp\bwgo00cd37b2.exe
Run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search/search.html
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe
Reboot, into 'Safe mode', and search for, then delete, if found, the following files/folders:
C:\DOCUME~1\Debbie\LOCALS~1\Temp\bwgo00cd37b2.exe <<<--file
To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.
Post a new HJT log please.
Oh, and I'm asking one of the advanced members also to check about what can be done with your second admin account. She has done tons of re-installs, and may have the answer. _________________

Tried it as you said, but the file is still there. Nothing I do seems to work. I checked all accounts, deleted the files, emptied TIF and Recycle Bin. I'm at a loss as to what to do.

However, the running process is not, and thats whats more important.
***Disable any registry monitoring apps you have please, as they will interfere with the fixes HJT makes.
(Tea Timer, in your case)
Run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe
Reboot, run HJT, if the above are gone, no need to repost with new log.
That should get it. _________________
