Hi everyone,

When a Highjack This log is posted, isn't their information that shouldn't be shared on a forum like bank account numbers, passwords etc? Just wondering.

Thanks,

No personal information is gathered by HJT, it simply lists items installed on your computer, thats all.

About the only info which may be garnered, is your name, if you chose to use that when naming yourself as a user. And even then, depending on the infection, that folder may never be listed.

You can of course always alter the HJT log to remove your name.

Hope that helps. Cool

I concur with TeMerc.

However, a hijackthis log will show your personal name under certain circumstances.

For example, IF your Profile (XP machines) is your Real Name, then the Folder
C:\DOCUMENTSandSETTINGS\yournameHERE\LOCALSETTINGS\.......
will show your Personal Name.

That is not a fault in hijackthis, it is because you, the User, chose to use your personal name in your Profile when you set up your machine.
This would also be true of anyone else in your Family, if they have their own Profiles.

I agree, any social engineer worth his salt wouldn't bother going to all the trouble of enumerating someone's HJT log simply so they could mess with their victim's head - they'd just pick up the phone Wink

Same goes for someone wanting to hack a machine - they may find some snippets of info on a log and thus find out what you're running, but so what? They wouldn't have your IP address or any other major way of tracking you down. Its much easier to just set a portscanner to sweep a range of addresses and find any vulnerable machines to play with.
