(This has been inserted so that searches can bring this fix up.)

For when all Win XP executables won't work and desktop icons are blanked with "*.link added into their description boxes, the fix is to obtain ww.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip

Also, ww.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/exefix.reg does much the same.

Above can be run from the Safe Mode, but you must RIGHT-CLICK on it if it won't open by double-clicking on it, select OPEN WITH then BROWSE and browse to C:\Windows\regedit.exe and select it to import and activate the fix.

A brief window will pop up saying that the fix was installed.

Turn off computer, restart, and as soon as you can get explorer from your desktop, double-click on the reg fix and and INSTALL IT AGAIN.

Single installs from Safe Mode seem to at times be partial, but if you can at least regain your working desktop icons from your activating the fix in Safe Mode, then an additional install of the reg fix makes it solid.

Incidentally, if you're running Win 95, 98, or ME, you can use Exefix08.com from this site:

http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/Only_IE.html

Save to disk, doubleclick, and it will restore the default Windows file associations for exefiles.

Also, let me add that, if there's malware on that computer that caused the exefile association to become corrupted in the first place, after a reboot you could very well be back were you started...

When in doubt, as soon as you have those exefiles working again, do post in our Hijack This Logs section, so that one of the experts here can help you determine whether additional steps need to be taken!

There is a better solution, since some virii/spyware also muck with .reg associations, but leave .inf associations alone.
Symantec offers this INF which corrects all Shell\Open\Command registry keys:

Quote:
[Version]
Signature="$Chicago$"
Provider=Symantec

[DefaultInstall]
AddReg=UnhookRegKey

[UnhookRegKey]
HKLM, Software\CLASSES\batfile\shell\open\command,,,"""%1"" %*"
HKLM, Software\CLASSES\comfile\shell\open\command,,,"""%1"" %*"
HKLM, Software\CLASSES\exefile\shell\open\command,,,"""%1"" %*"
HKLM, Software\CLASSES\piffile\shell\open\command,,,"""%1"" %*"
HKLM, Software\CLASSES\regfile\shell\open\command,,,"regedit.exe "%1""
HKLM, Software\CLASSES\scrfile\shell\open\command,,,"""%1"" %*"
HKCU, Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System,DisableRegistryTools,0x00000020,0
