I use diskeeper lite V7 (the free one) to defragment.

It works perfectly well in "normal" mode however I believe its better to defragment in "safe" mode.

Whenever I try to do this however I get a message "unable to connect to the diskeeper service in the selected machine. Connecting to the local machine" Diskeeper then opens and hangs.

If I go to administrative tools and services and attempt to start the diskeeper service I get the message "Error 1084: service cannot be started in safe mode".

Searching the Internet it seems most people run it in safe mode easily. I've found one reference to my specific problem and that is a page in German! At least it proves I'm not the only one.

I'm running Windows XP Home SP2. Only one user account if that helps.

So please can any of you experts tell me where I'm going wrong?

just run it in normal mode but shut off uneeded programs from running.
