Hi All-
This is my first post. After reading several threads, I cannot determine how to get rid of some obnoxious hijacks that keep occurring. Occassionally, and usually from a yahoo page, a new IE window will popup and direct me to one of several websites, including vipfares.com and stopguard.com. The following URL shows up where I was browsing in Yahoo:
http://b.www.yahoo.com/module/procframe.php?test=125
I've run AdAware, Spybot, and even Spyware Blaster yet these website still occassionally popup. I've also run HijackThis and here is my log:

Please go to at least two of these sites and run an online Virus Scan.
Be sure to have the AutoFix box checked.
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?productid=symhome&langid=ie&venid=sym
Then, if you do not have them yet, please DL and run AdAware & Spybot Search & Destroy.AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy are 2 of the most trusted apps in the security area. They are both free, compliment each other nicely, and do not use a lot of resources. They can be found here:
Spybot v. 1.3
Ad-Aware
With AdAware and Spybot: DL, check for updates, then scan, repair/remove/quarantine anything found. Reboot before next scan with whichever app is next. The reason for running these apps, is to clean up some of the other 'crapware' on your pc, which, in turn, will make deciphering your HJT log, easier.

They will need to be tweaked:
Have you checked for all current updates and tweaked Ad-Aware and Spybot?
You can do this by following these directions:
To configure Ad-aware,
Click the gear icon at top
press scanning at left
Check all you can in there
Click tweaks at left
Expand scanning engine in centre of window
Check "unload recognized processes during scaning"
Expand cleaning engine in centre of window
Check "let windows remove files in use after reboot"
Click proceed to save settings
Press scan now
Check option "use custom scan options"
Check option "activate In-Depth scan"
Press "select drives/folders to scan"
Choose the c: drive
Press next to start the scan
Once done press next
Right click in results pane and choose "select all"
Press next
Answer yes to the prompt.
To configure Spybot S&D, there is an excellent tutorial here Spybot tutorial
When you are done with those two programs, Shut down ad-aware and spybot s&d
Then:
Please download this app:HiJackThis v:1.98.2
Also available here as hotlinks:
http://spywarewarrior.com/files/hijackthis.zip
and here:
http://spywarewarrior.com/files/HijackThis.exe
DL, then place HiJackThis into its OWN FOLDER. (C:\HiJackThis\HijackThis.exe)Create a new folder, called whatever is easy for you to recall, and unzip HJT into that folder. The reason for this is, HJT cannot create a backup unless it is in its own folder.
Run the program, and press Scan. You will notice the Scan button will turn into a "Save Log" button. Save the log and Post your log onto this topic. DO NOT DELETE or modify anything yet, as some of it is needed to keep your system in proper working order. _________________ Proud member of the Chest Zipper Club! |

HI,
OK, sorry it took so long, but I've gone through the steps you've outlined and created another hijack log. In addition, I've noticed this 'ftpdb.exe' process that is constantly running on my machine, and it occassionally consumes CPU cycles and slows down my PC. I can't find anything about it on the web.
I am still experiencing the problems with the above mentioned websites, too.
any help would be appreciated!

OK, I've been working on a fix for this over the weekend and now have it nailed down.
One question though:
Are you posting this log from user profile ANTHON~1 (or Anthony, or similar)?
If not, I will need you to go into that profile and run a fresh hijackthis log. _________________ Proud member of the Chest Zipper Club! |

OK, do not reboot or shut down your machine.
It won't hurt it if you go to bed whilst I write up a new fix, but it 'will' hurt us both if the infection mutates _________________ Proud member of the Chest Zipper Club! |

Sorry I took so long to get back to you, I got a bit tied up here.
DO NOT reboot until you have done all of the items below or until prompted by killbox. If a file is not there, skip on to the next one.
Please Print these instructions, you will not be able to access this page in safe mode.
1)Click on this link http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip to download TheKillbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the drop down menu next to the yellow triangle scroll until you see
C:\WINDOWS\msagent\chars\wmsinet.exe and select it. Click the yellow triangle and click yes that you want to end task.
In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:
C:\WINDOWS\msagent\chars\wmsinet.exe
Next, click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". Click the button with the red circle with a white X in it.
Close killbox.
2)Enable 'show all files'
3) Reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 at boot, then use the up/down arrows to select safe mode
4) On the start page of hijackthis, run a new scan and checkmark/fix the following lines:

OK, your log is a bit messy, looks like you didn't completely clear the last one from a notepad copy.
Could you run one more for me please? _________________ Proud member of the Chest Zipper Club! |

None thus far. I would give you a big hug if I could. Is there a donation or anything that I can make to the organization. Why Not? I paid someone 29.95 to infect my computer. I downloaded Spystormer, but I was told by my internet comany they never heard of them and think about uninstalling there software. I' not sure if it was totally the software, but I'm sure it probably played a key role.
YOU ARE A ANGEL.!!!!!!!....
THank You, Thank YOU ;0) |

Hugs are cool
Now that you are clean, we have a couple of other things to finish up:
Clean your cache and toss your cookies!
You should do this routinely, say once a week.
Reset a new system restore point
Then please consider using some of these apps to help prevent further infections:
Spywareblaster and Spywareguard DL, check for updates, enable all protection, and your done!
Instead of using Internet Explorer for your day-to-day browsing, try one of these free browsers instead:
Opera. Features include tabbed browsing, built-in pop-up stopper
Mozilla, Firefox, Camino. Linux based.
Slim Browser. IE without the bells and whistles.
