I have been helped a lot by the Warriors, and recommend them to anyone I think would be interested, so here we go again ....
Many moons ago I asked for help with good AV & anti-malware for XP on "Spyware.."
I recieved excellent advice then, Avast & Malabytes, and was very happy with them.
Well, I've now been persuaded to make a massive step into the unknown with a leap to Windows 8 (special deal from local "go to" guys had something to do with it, plus the creakiness of ancient, not quite so reliable servant XP) .
So my query is, are these still a good bet ? I'm with a short-term "sample" Bullguard at present, and would prefer to go free, considering my past experience.
Is there enough user feedback regarding Win 8 anti-nasty applications yet ?
I am struggling a bit with the OS, but can see it is an improvement, just need to get up to speed on it really.
Speaking of which, it really is a great improvement as to speedy operation, opening, searching etc...
I'd be grateful for any help - and please bear in mind I am Mr. TechDunce, please ! |

As you're probably aware, Windows Defender has been updated in W8, and now contains an Anti-Virus component very similar to Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).
I've no personal experience with W8 yet, but I've used MSE, and it's a perfectly serviceable AV product.
As far as I'm aware, both the free versions of Avast and Malwarebytes have been updated to be W8 compatible, so if you're already familiar with them, then they may be a better choice for you. They should still give the level of protection that you're used to.
Actually W8 has a number of new built in security features, so overall you should generally have fewer Malware problems than you may have had with XP.

Many thanks Gary, I think I shall follow your suggestion and stick with Avast & Malabytes - and, as you say, it does look as if they've done a decent job security-wise with Win8.
Thank you for the links, that was very enlightening - well, most of it, some did go over my head rather, but it did demonstrate the improvements made !
Appreciate your help. |

You're welcome.
The major security improvements in W8 are related to the way it boots up, and without going into technical details, what it means is that W8 is more resistant to the kinds of "rootkit" and "bootkit" infections that are "doing the rounds", and causing most of the problems at the moment. _________________ Gary R Administrator at Malware Removal University
