While on the whole I am very happy with Windows 7, there are two major omissions which really I really miss.

The first of these is the ability to do a repair install from the original Windows DVD, which incidentally is something completely different to the startup repair option you are given when Windows 7 fails to boot. Unfortunately, there is no solution for this (other than to stick with XP and not use Vista or 7).

The second one, is the lack of network activity indicators. In Vista and previous releases of Windows, for all network connections, there was a network icon which showing two monitors, which would light up when the network adapter is sending or receiving data. Sadly Microsoft removed this from Windows 7. Fortunately there is an easy fix to this - a program called Network Activity Indicator.

Quote:
Network Activity Indicator displays the old 'two monitors' icon in Windows 7 that flashed blue to show network activity on the System Tray.

Unlike the original Windows XP utility (that has individual indicators for each interface), this program indicates outgoing and incoming network packets on all available interfaces.

You can download it here: http://www.itsamples.com/network-activity-indicator.html

You can configure it to run every time you start Windows.

If it's icon becomes hidden, you can remedy this by clicking on the upwards pointing arrow next to your system tray icons to reveal all the hidden icons, and then selecting Customize...

Then you will need to change the Behaviors for "Network Activity Indicator system tray utility" to "Show icon and notifications"
