Posted: Tue Feb 03, 2009 5:39 pm Post subject: How do I get back tax refund for gas purchases |
|
|
| I live no-cal, fill up at least once a week sometimes two, even when people are not filling up their tanks as much for some reason here the gas prices are still going (Just fill-up 11+gal tank for 2.13). With this state going to____ in a hand basket with IOU's and other BS, i was wondering how i can get a little of my hard-earn money back with these gas purchases. I was told u need to save your receipts (which i started today), i just started doing my research but i was seeing if anyone who knows or is claiming this tax refund could point me to the right direction, any help would be grateful. Thanks. |

The only repayments for gas I know of are:
1. If you work for a company that reimburses for mileage when you use your own vehicle for business.
2. Or if you are self employed you can claim the federal rate for mileage driven for business purposes.
In both those cases, the credit is for mileage traveled, not the amount of gas you buy.
I have not heard of anything like you are talking about. Your best bet is to talk to a CPA or an accountant who does tax work. _________________ Former Microsoft MVP 2005-2009, Consumer Security

I'm no CPA, but I know in the past you had a choice to itemize all vehicle expenses in stead of taking the simple mileage deduction. I'm pretty sure it's more involved and might require a lot of study and the qualification that you prepare taxes using the method which allows this, but a good tax pro would be a good idea if you think it would be worth the expense. I'm my personal experience, knowing what others have experienced (I guess that's not my personal experience at all is it? lol) I wouldn't use H&R block.
You could ask the IRS directly by calling from the number I think is posted on IRS.gov, but you want to be careful with info you get from them as well. Seems NO ONE understands the stinking tax code, even those who wrote it and those who are supposed to be in charge of the entire monetary supply messed up on their taxes. I don't know why they expect us to get it.
