hi all - i have a some general and maybe even vague questions abt anti-spyware/ anti-virus programs and the like.

i have purchased a new Dell...it should be arriving tomorrow. i customized it so that no Firewall, Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware programs will be installed as i will be installing my own. i will be using the following:

Firewall: free version of Comodo
Anti-Virus/Spyware:free version of AVG 8.0

i also plan on installing SpywareBlaster. possibly Spybot S & D.

do you have an opinion or preferance when it comes to Spybot
vs. Super AntiSpyware??

you should also know that 98% of the time i will be using
Mozilla for a browser.

my basic concern is will this provide me with enough protection??
would you suggest i use any other FREE programs to protect my new PC that won't slow my PC down or conflict with each other? i am concerned abt compatibility issue's as well.

thanks a bunch...

That sounds like a good secure setup to me, not unlike what I have here. I suggest you have Spybot (but not teatimer) and Superantispyware both installed as on-demand scanners, since no single program will trap all the rubbish out there.

Sounds like you'll be good to go with that setup.

I would add Winpatrol. Excellant startup manager among other features. http://www.winpatrol.com/

To thunder77,

I assume your OS will be vista.

But you are to be commended for thinking about this in advance. As long as you have these programs burned to cd or pen drive, get them installed before you expose the new computer to the internet, you should do fine. Then you can log onto the internet, do your updates and OS patches, and be internet pretty safe.
Without basic protections in place, one can get hacked very rapidly
at first exposure to the internet.

I would personally question your choice of AVG as an AV, I think you would do better with either freeware versions of avast or avira, but once you have a basic security set up in place, you can play around with other programs at your leisure. I agree with goldengreek, you should have some sort of process control. Computer security is always a moving target, as the bad guys get smarter, we have to quickly adapt and stay that half step behind.
