I have no issues at the moment, so just a 'general' question.

I have XP Home SP2.
One feature I would like is a trojan & Rootkit killer.

My A/V is Bit Def Internet Security.

I also have
1. Spyware Doctor - paid version.(but is a nuisance to use, re-boots after updating);
2. A Sq'd Free;
3. Lavasoft Ad-aware 2007 (free version) &
4. Crap Cleaner

Have also used in the past.
1. AVG Anti-spyware (free version)
2. Spyware Blaster
3. Spy Bot Search & Destroy
4. Bazooka.
5. Super Anti-spyware

So, which should I keep, which should I not use.
I ask as I have used Ad-aware and thought it was good, then read on this site that its a memory hog and really not all that great of a tool.

Thx

I've moved this topic from the HijackThis forum to one that is more appropriate and where you may get an answer.

sethm1,

In my opinion, you should keep those(current) tools except Ad-Aware 2007. What the others say about AA2007 is true, its a memory hogging app. I have also encountered this problem and removing it seems to solve the problem. Just a few securities will do. I recommend you to use Spyware Doctor Starter Edition; no restarts after updating. 1 antivirus, 1 antispyware and CrapCleaner is counted as a decent suite. If you are very concern about security, you might want to add PC Tools Threat Fire to the list. It helps to block threats and it is a set-it-and-forget app.

Question on Spyware Doctor-
How do I know I have the free Starter version?

I uninstalled my paid version, rebooted the PC, then installed the Starter version- yet I am asked to turn off spyware Dr.
I think it also asked to reboot the PC on a new upload.

Forgot to add
1) The start up page says I have 192 days left (which I think what I have left on my paid version).

2) Version # is 5.5.0.178

It was recommended that you remove Ad-aware as it is bloated
HOWEVER
if you only use it as an on demand scanner
or are using the free version
all it takes is disk space
no resources
So I do not know what the objection is
no one scanner catches everything and using spybot or ad-aware as a backup scanner can't hurt

On Spyware Doctor
If you have the paid version why would you remove it and install the free version?
Best get these kinds of questions to the Spyware Doctor Forum or tech support (since you have a paid version)
Any Spyware Doctor experts lurking?

Why switch from the paid version to the free?
With the paid version, the PC has to reboot after updating and if I choose to turn it off. I just want a simple to use program.
Also curious if other Spyware Dr users out there.

I think it only needs rebooting afteter download program updates - not from updating it's spyware definiitions so it is not something that happnes much. Also you will find it the same for the free version.

As far as I know once you have installed the full version with a valid serial number, there is no way to use the free version. A while back I installed the free version - but ended up with the full version installed. But why don't you just disable the OnGuard realtime protection in the paid version?

I'll try the disable the OnGuard suggestion.
Though seems this program wants to reboot way too often for me.

Well you can choose not to reboot and you should still be able to use Spyware Doctor - just the program will not be updated until you reboot.

Not quite correct. AdAware2007 runs a background service in the free version, whether it is open or not. (So does avg AS. So does A2. So it's not alone, there.) When I had it installed, it used between 1.3 and 6 Mb. Reason I uninstalled was the buggy updater, and boot errors reported on every restart while it was installed.
I'd personally (from a standpoint of not very expert) recommend Superantispyware for a demand scanner. Various antirootkit applications around, don't know a lot about them, have a look here.http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/antirk.html
Nothing wrong with keeping SpywareBlaster, especially if you use IE for browsing. Long time since I've seen Bazooka updated. Ccleaner I wouldn't be without. Fort a realtime antitrojan, you might want to check out Comodo's Boclean. I would caution against having too many similar resident programs installed, however.

Thanks for the background info on ad-aware 2007
The version I used to use does not run anything in background
can that process be turned off?
Ad-aware 2007 and Sunbelt Counterspy(as of mid year) do not support Vintage Windows and I have over 100 vintage windows machines that need cleaning from time to time

I used to use AdAware SE, and with no problems/background services either. I believe updates for SE can still be manually downloaded, but if so, probably not for much longer.
IIRC the service can be turned off, set to manual, but then the program wouldn't run. I'm a bit hazy on that, try it.

http://www.superantispyware.com/supportfaqdisplay.html?faq=6 supports Windows98 through Vista.
SpywareTerminator has a version that supports 98, but as a demand scanner only. The others I just don't know, sorry.

for vintage windows

Spyware doctor, Spybot Search and Destroy, A squared,
pest patrol?
Pest patrol had a version which provided real time protection but no removal (scan only)
and a version which which did removal but no real time protection-sorta like Ad-aware SE
sort too bad
Sunbelt had an excellent product was GIANT

Webroot Spy Sweeper has evidently dropped vintage support and EWIDO/ AVG never had it

but the protection schemes seem to be the way to go

I pop WinPatrol first thing on any Windows box I build for myself. Bear in mind it's not an anti-malware/virus tool per se, but it will monitor a heck of a lot of stuff happening in the background on your pc, and can really help put YOU in the driver's seat. Wink I think it's also a good educational tool - though it can be a little scary to see all the things Adobe Acrobat tries to do on install.... Rolling Eyes
