I have to say, I am angered. Mainly, I am talking about the "Die Spyware, Die!" article. (Please note: I read the magazine article first, and later on, you'll find out why this matters.) In it, PC World scores some of the leading anti-spyware programs. (Link: http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,136205/article.html) They tested the following programs and rated them:
Spyware Doctor (Purchased Version)
AVG Anti-Spyware (Purchased Version)
SpySweeper 5.5 (Purchased Version)
Windows Defender (Free Version)
Spybot: Search And Destroy 1.4 (Free, Outdated Version)
AdAware 2007 (Purchased Version)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They ranked in this order:
Spyware Doctor
AVG Anti-Spyware
AdAware 2007
SpySweeper 5.5
Windows Defender
Spybot 1.4
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In my honest and true opinion, that was a [b]LOAD OF BULL&*#$![b] I mean, come on.
Reasons why PC World needs to totally re-review leading anti-spyware programs:
Spybot 1.4 is now outdated, and performs much better than the free versions of AdAware and Windows Defender from almost every opinion I've heard on it. Spyware Doctor is now outdated too, if you count the beta.
PC World put free programs against fully paid for versions. How unfair. Spyware Doctor has a free version, not to mention Ad-Aware 2007, and AVG Anti-Spyware. I mean, honestly, PC World really needed to have to different study groups. One on fully paid for programs, and one for free protection.
PC World has failed to include many other leading anti-spyware programs such as:
CounterSpy
SUPERAntispyware
Spyware Blaster
Spyware Terminator (Not the rogue version)
Windows Live OneCare
(In my opinion, PC World is just being suspiciously selective, don't you think?)
It is unknowing what infections PC World put on these computers.
PC World should have reviewed on a Windows XP SP2, instead of Vista. They tested AdAware 2007 on an XP SP2 computer, after all. (I know, I know, not compatible with Vista. Or have they fixed that?)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Ironic Revenge Is A Dish Best Served Steaming Hot To The Masses)
Oh, and get this, if you have some objection to my opinions above:
In the magazine version of the "Die, Spyware, Die!" article, they have an ad for a SpectorSoft product. SpectorSoft is a company that sells monitoring suites, that come with all the makings, such as screenshots, keyloggers, etc. Oh, and PC World even had one of those "Find" links.
PC World had an ad for Spyware Terminator in their magazine, but yet, they didn't test it.
PC World also mentions Windows Live OneCare somewhere in the magazine.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, yeah, I'm kind of mad about this article, but please, discuss it. _________________

IMO, all such tests are to be taken with a huge grain of salt. There's a post here about why good testing is rare. If I can find the thread, I'll post it here. _________________ Former Microsoft MVP 2005-2009, Consumer Security

Found it and made it a sticky because it's worth keeping in view.

Ah, thanks suzi. You've calmed me a little bit. _________________

As to the rest of your comments I am with Suzi
But in all fairness to the article, the test was done before the latest version of Spybot S&D was released.
I originally read these results at the beginning of August _________________

I am aware of that now after doing a little bit more research. But still, Spybot is a free program, and should not be compared to a 30$ anti-spyware program. _________________
