Hi.. hope someone can help me?

I downloaded the MVPS host files. I am able to access and edit it using hostXpert.

However when I tried testing to see it was working using this method :- “Test #1: Open a Command Prompt (XP): Start | Run (type) cmd (click Ok) (type) ping coolwebsearch.com (press Enter) You should see the following [screenshot], I did not get the screenshot as shown.”
What I got was this message : Ping : transmit failed, error code 5.

Now I am not too sure it my host files are working as it should have been. Any advice would be most grateful.

Thanks and warm regards

Bee

Hi, try to ping www.google.com for a test to see if ping works at all first.

If you can ping google successfully and not coolwebsearch.com then your Hosts file is probably working fine.

If you can't ping any site and you have a firewall it may be blocking your ICMP packets and could be the cause of the error message you see.

As long as your hosts file is in the right place for your operating system and it has no file extension it should be working fine.

For another quick test, you can add a safe domain name of your choice to your hosts file and try to access that site through your browser.

If you can't access the site you know the hosts file is working and you can then remove the test domain from your hosts file.

Hi Moore

I added Spywarewarrior.com to my hosts file and tried to access that site through your browser..And failed...

Its a relief to know my host file is working fine.

Thanks much for your help.
