A Trojan horse has been created that causes smart phones to crash, security software maker F-Secure has warned. The Finnish company posted details of the Trojan horse, which they've named Fontal.A, on Wednesday. Fontal.A affects Nokia Series 60 handsets running the Symbian operating system. The advisory did not say whether any infections had been reported.
Other Trojan horses, or applications that appear to be legitimate but perform illicit activity when they are run, have found their way into smart phones. But unlike the CommWarrior Trojan, Fontal.A does not propagate over Bluetooth wireless networking connections or Multimedia Message Service, which is a mobile technology for sending text messages that can also include images, audio or video. Instead, it is distributed via file-sharing or IRC (Internet relay chat).
Fontal.A tries to install a corrupted file, called "Kill Saddam By OID500.sis," into the infected device, causing it to fail at the next reboot, F-Secure said. If the handset is rebooted, it gets stuck and can't be used until it is disinfected.
The Trojan also damages the application manager, preventing new programs from being installed and stopping the Trojan itself from being uninstalled. The only fix is to reformat the phone. However, doing this causes all data on the handset to be lost, F-Secure said.

APRIL 07, 2005 (IDG NEWS SERVICE) - Antivirus software company F-Secure Corp. is warning mobile phone users about a new malicious software program that infects phones that use the Symbian Series 60 operating system.
The Trojan horse program, dubbed Fontal.A, prevents phones from starting. It isn't a worm or virus, and it would have to be downloaded by the phone's owner to infect a Symbian phone. It's just the latest example of malicious code, including worms and viruses, that target mobile devices.
Fontal.A was discovered yesterday and is transferred to mobile phones as an SIS format installer file called "Kill Saddam By OID500.sis," F-Secure said.
Once installed, the program damages the phone so that the phone can't reboot. Users of mobile phones infected with Fontal should not turn off their phones before removing the Trojan, F-Secure said. The company posted instructions for removing the Trojan from infected phones on its Web page.

Disinfection
F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus will detect Fontal.A and delete the trojan components.
1. Open web browser on the phone
2. Go to http://mobile.f-secure.com
3. Select link "Download F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus" and then select phone model
4. Download the file and select open after download
5. Install F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus
6. Go to applications menu and start Anti-Virus
7. Activate Anti-Virus and scan all files
After disinfecting you phone, you can remove remaining empty directories by going to application manager and uninstalling the SIS file in which Comwarrior arrived (Kill Saddam By OID500.sis)
Manual disinfection
1. Install file manager on the phone
2. Go to c:\System\apps\appmngr
3. Delete appmngr.app
4. Go to the application manager
5. Uninstall the SIS file in which the Fontal.A was installed in
