Im a total novice at posting on 'techie' sites like this (ie ones full of pc wizards like your kind selves:) so please bear with me..........!

i would usually have a chat with one of my IT mates who work in the business and are dead good at talking you through procedures over the phone but i've now got a situation that needs more EXPERT attention as its beaten 'em!!!

I am confident that i have a virus of somesort and after searching on the net i can only find 2 or 3 entries relating to it (all in similar forums). Most importantly it seems to have everyone stumped and no known procedure or software is killing the damn thing.

Im running Sygate firewall, Sophos Virus scanner, Webroot SpySweeper and have recently added Hijackthis to help me to try to get rid of this particular virus.

The virus has added itself to my START UP directory and SpwSweeper is telling me its there so i click remove. 3 or 4 secs later SpySweeper again says its there so basically no matter how many times u kill it the damn thing reappears. The file name is a nonsense .exe file and changes... its currently called 887k2.exe and is running 4 times in my TASK MANAGER. I can end each process but they eventually reappear without warning.

Now, when you are connected to the internet Sygate warns me that this file is trying to connect to a website called treestompertime.net so obviously i block it. If you look at this website you have one line - 'what do you want to find here?'. I am confident i have this thing under control by blocking it with Sygate but cant get rid of it. My Sophos Anti-Virus doesnt find it and it seems that all other virus software isnt aware of it yet (or maybe its so old noones talking about it now!)..... has anyone heard of this little bugger and more importantly can anyone tell me how to kill it!

The couple of threads ive read mentioning it say its a trojan and it appears that all usual virus killing procedures dont work.

If you anymore info ill gladly fill u in Very Happy

This thing is evil and must die!!!

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Right off the bat, lets run a couple of other scans to help remove some other malicious files which may be present. Good as SpySweeper is, it, like most other scanners, can't find everything.

Lets also get a couple of online av scans too:

Please head over to either Trend Micro or Panda ActiveScan and do an online, free, full system scan. Be sure and have the 'Auto Clean' button checked.
Trend Micro
Panda ActiveScan

For ease in troubleshooting the HijackThis logs and because some spyware can be easily removed, it's a good idea to first run a good spyware removal program, such as Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. They need to be updated with their latest reference files before running. Reboot after use to let them remove what they find. This also gives the next app, a 'clean' look at your machine.
Ad-Aware SE
Spybot Search & Destroy v 1.3

With AdAware and Spybot: DL, check for updates, then scan, repair/remove/quarantine anything found. Reboot before next scan with whichever app is next. The reason for running these apps, is to clean up some of the other 'crapware' on your pc, which, in turn, will make deciphering your HJT log, easier.

If, you have already run AdAware SE & Spybot Search & Destroy, with updated definitions, and are still having problems, next, we move onto HiJackThis v:1.99.1
DL the zip file to your desktop, then create a new folder on your C drive, called 'HJT' or 'HijackThis'. Then unzip the files to the new folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.
Run the program, and press Scan. You will notice the Scan button will turn into a "Save Log" button. Save the log and Post that log into this topic. DO NOT DELETE or modify anything yet, as some of it is needed to keep your system in good shape.

Once all the above has been done, please post a new HJT log.

Someone will be along to look at your log soon as possible, we appreciate your patience. Remember, we are ALL VOLUNTEERS, those of us who help. And we do the best we can to answer posts as soon as we can. Logs are generally looked at in the order in which they are posted.

Well, we may be experts, but apprantly not at keeping track of ALL the logs............sorry we missed this post, we try hard to not let it happen, but you know what they say about good intentions.....apologies again.

Arrow Please go to 'Task Manager' and 'End Task' on the following process(es):
C:\WINDOWS\System32\jdldhr.exe (both)

Arrow Please look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

OK, all clear, experiencing any more troubles? Let me know please.

We have 3 more things to do, to help ensure you have removed all the little 'leftovers' which may be hiding:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
Index.dat Suite

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion.

Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation

Now that you have regained control of your machine, lets keep it clean. Please follow the links below to ensure the highest possible level of protection against any further invasions. The links and the apps are some of the most highly regarded apps in the field of security/protection & detection. Run AdAware & Spybot at least once a week, depending on your surfing habits.
Spybot Search & Destroy v1.3
Ad-Aware SE

With AdAware and Spybot: DL, check for updates, then scan, repair/remove/quarantine anything found. Reboot before next scan with whichever app is next.

Spyware Blaster & Spyware Guard
Both of these apps prevent installation of nasties and are proactive.
With Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, just DL, check for updates, enable protection, and your done!

To prevent known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being installed on your machine inistall WinPatrol.

Tutorials for all can be found on my site as well.

Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:

Subscribe to update alerts for all the above security apps here.

Happy surfing!
