Hello to CASPIAN members and friends:
The VeriChip battle is heating up! The Associated Press published a
feature article today on the human implant controversy that is appearing
on newsstands across America:
Chips: High tech aids or tracking tools?
By Todd Lewan, AP National Writer
July 22, 2007
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/1700AP_Chipping_America.html
The article is highlighted on the Drudge Report and is printed in over
200 newspapers and news outlets around the country, including USA Today,
Business Week, Forbes, Fox News, and the Washington Post.
Major papers in Houston, Seattle, Denver, San Jose, Charlotte, Chicago,
Kansas City, Miami, and more have picked up the story. It has even
reached the UK Guardian newspaper and outlets in Canada and Australia.
For a partial list, see:
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&ie=UTF-8&scoring=d&q=microchip
+lewan&btnG=Search
The article features a full color photo of our anti-chipping protest in
West Palm Beach, Florida and a link to our new http://www.AntiChips.com
website. It also features quotes by me and my Spychips co-author Liz
McIntyre, and mentions our book, "Spychips: How major Corporations and
Government Plan to Track Your Every Move with RFID."
I spoke with Todd Lewan, the AP reporter who wrote the story, and told
him everything we know about the downsides of the VeriChip Corporation
and its dangerous, Big Brother plans to chip the public. (Liz and I have
been posting these stories on our Spychips.com website for several years
at http://www.spychips.com/press.html) . Mr. Lewan independently
verified many of our concerns and discussed them in the article.
Back in May after our West Palm Beach protest, I asked you all to be
patient, as the truth about the VeriChip would soon be coming out. Now
our efforts to alert the public are beginning to bear fruit.
Sit tight. This is just the start of the backlash.
In freedom,
Katherine Albrecht, Ed.D.

Dear CASPIAN members and supporters:
Did you get a copy of your local paper this weekend? If so, there's a
good chance it ran the explosive AP story on implanted microchips
causing cancer in laboratory animals. And you'll want to save it.
Thanks to the AP, people everywhere now know the truth about implantable
cancer chips. This story is HUGE and it's growing bigger by the minute.
It has already been picked up by an incredible 300+ news outlets across
the Internet:
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=verichip&ie=UTF-8&scoring=d&sa=N&start=20
...and the bloggers are going nuts, too:
http://blogsearch.google.com/blogsearch?hl=en&tab=wb&q=verichip
+cancer&ie=UTF-8&scoring=d
(Click up these links and grin - it will do your heart good!
This kind of negative publicity spells the beginning of the end for
VeriChip and their plans to chip us all like bar coded packages of meat.
And it comes not a moment too soon, if recent glowing media stories
about VeriChip are any indication.
As you will recall, on Good Morning America just last month millions of
people watched in horror as a doctor injected a VeriChip into the arm of
a 92-year old man. See the video clip here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuvI1RH4jMI
"I don't think there's anything to worry about," said the man, as the
chip slid into his flesh.
Do you think he would say that today?
No way! That's because we've stopped the freight train.
This weekend, as they opened up newspapers around the nation, your
fellow countrymen and women woke up to the dangers of VeriChip -- and
recoiled in horror.
They took a nauseating look at the color illustration showing how the
VeriChip implant stimulates the development of cancer cells in dogs.
They took a gander at the photo of former HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson,
the Washington DC fat cat and long-time Bush crony whose dealings with
the FDA and subsequent compensation package from VeriChip have raised a
lot of questions.
Readers may have seen a photo of me standing in the library stacks. As
you may recall, I filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the
FDA in 2004 when the agency approved the VeriChip because I
instinctively knew these implants could not be safe. I am also the
researcher who first brought the cancer studies to AP's attention and
provided additional information throughout their four-month
investigation.
Of course, my Spychips co-author Liz McIntyre has also been deeply
involved in this issue, devoting her amazing research talents and years
of effort to uncovering VeriChip's downsides. We wouldn't know a great
deal of what we know without her.
And Liz would like to credit another very special woman, June, the owner
of Leon the bulldog, who first told us about the cancer problem. When
this brave lady discovered that a cancer chip had killed her dog, she
didn't give in to despair. Instead, she rolled up her sleeves and found
a veterinary expert who would look at the evidence and publish the story
in a medical journal. Thanks to June's perseverance, Leon's tragic death
may save the lives of countless other implanted dogs.
Liz has posted a moving tribute to June and Leon here:
http://www.spychips.com/blog/2007/09/rfid_cancer_story_catalyst_lov.html
As you can imagine, bringing this story to light was a long and arduous
process involving many people -- and much work. If you have a copy of
the newspaper, read it slowly and savor our victory. It's a victory for
us all.
Save the article and put it in a special place. When you find yourself
getting discouraged and believing that the little guy can't win,
remember Leon, and June, and Liz, and me, and all the other little
people who have taken on the behemoth and won. Margaret Mead was right
when she said that a few committed people is all you need to change the
world.
As the war on our freedoms heats up and begins raging around us like a
wildfire, keep the faith and remember this day. Smile as you remember
how a few gutsy women and a crackerjack reporter poked Big Brother in
the eye and brought down one of the most menacing corporations on the
planet.
Hooray!
If you would like to join me to celebrate the fall of VeriChip, I will
be covering this issue all week long on my radio program:

I give details on the cancer chip story and unveil a mind-blowingly
powerful new campaign to end the implant menace once and for all.

Chip Implants Linked to Animal Tumors
TODD LEWAN, Associated Press
http://www.bradenton.com/439/story/141238.html
When the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved implanting
microchips in humans, the manufacturer said it would save lives, letting
doctors scan the tiny transponders to access patients' medical records
almost instantly. The FDA found "reasonable assurance" the device was
safe, and a sub-agency even called it one of 2005's top "innovative
technologies."
But neither the company nor the regulators publicly mentioned this: A
series of veterinary and toxicology studies, dating to the mid-1990s,
stated that chip implants had "induced" malignant tumors in some lab
mice and rats.
"The transponders were the cause of the tumors," said Keith Johnson, a
retired toxicologic pathologist, explaining in a phone interview the
findings of a 1996 study he led at the Dow Chemical Co. in Midland,
Mich.
Leading cancer specialists reviewed the research for The Associated
Press and, while cautioning that animal test results do not necessarily
apply to humans, said the findings troubled them. Some said they would
not allow family members to receive implants, and all urged further
research before the glass-encased transponders are widely implanted in
people.
To date, about 2,000 of the so-called radio frequency identification, or
RFID, devices have been implanted in humans worldwide, according to
VeriChip Corp. The company, which sees a target market of 45 million
Americans for its medical monitoring chips, insists the devices are
safe, as does its parent company, Applied Digital Solutions, of Delray
Beach, Fla.
"We stand by our implantable products which have been approved by the
FDA and/or other U.S. regulatory authorities," Scott Silverman, VeriChip
Corp. chairman and chief executive officer, said in a written response
to AP questions.
The company was "not aware of any studies that have resulted in
malignant tumors in laboratory rats, mice and certainly not dogs or
cats," but he added that millions of domestic pets have been implanted
with microchips, without reports of significant problems.
"In fact, for more than 15 years we have used our encapsulated glass
transponders with FDA approved anti-migration caps and received no
complaints regarding malignant tumors caused by our product."
The FDA also stands by its approval of the technology.
Did the agency know of the tumor findings before approving the chip
implants? The FDA declined repeated AP requests to specify what studies
it reviewed.
The FDA is overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services,
which, at the time of VeriChip's approval, was headed by Tommy Thompson.
Two weeks after the device's approval took effect on Jan. 10, 2005,
Thompson left his Cabinet post, and within five months was a board
member of VeriChip Corp. and Applied Digital Solutions. He was
compensated in cash and stock options.
Thompson, until recently a candidate for the 2008 Republican
presidential nomination, says he had no personal relationship with the
company as the VeriChip was being evaluated, nor did he play any role in
FDA's approval process of the RFID tag.
"I didn't even know VeriChip before I stepped down from the Department
of Health and Human Services," he said in a telephone interview.
Also making no mention of the findings on animal tumors was a June
report by the ethics committee of the American Medical Association,
which touted the benefits of implantable RFID devices.
Had committee members reviewed the literature on cancer in chipped
animals?
No, said Dr. Steven Stack, an AMA board member with knowledge of the
committee's review.
Was the AMA aware of the studies?
No, he said.
,,,
Published in veterinary and toxicology journals between 1996 and 2006,
the studies found that lab mice and rats injected with microchips
sometimes developed subcutaneous "sarcomas" , malignant tumors, most of
them encasing the implants.
, A 1998 study in Ridgefield, Conn., of 177 mice reported cancer
incidence to be slightly higher than 10 percent , a result the
researchers described as "surprising."
, A 2006 study in France detected tumors in 4.1 percent of 1,260
microchipped mice. This was one of six studies in which the scientists
did not set out to find microchip-induced cancer but noticed the growths
incidentally. They were testing compounds on behalf of chemical and
pharmaceutical companies; but they ruled out the compounds as the
tumors' cause. Because researchers only noted the most obvious tumors,
the French study said, "These incidences may therefore slightly
underestimate the true occurrence" of cancer.
, In 1997, a study in Germany found cancers in 1 percent of 4,279
chipped mice. The tumors "are clearly due to the implanted microchips,"
the authors wrote.
Caveats accompanied the findings. "Blind leaps from the detection of
tumors to the prediction of human health risk should be avoided," one
study cautioned. Also, because none of the studies had a control group
of animals that did not get chips, the normal rate of tumors cannot be
determined and compared to the rate with chips implanted.
Still, after reviewing the research, specialists at some pre-eminent
cancer institutions said the findings raised red flags.
"There's no way in the world, having read this information, that I would
have one of those chips implanted in my skin, or in one of my family
members," said Dr. Robert Benezra, head of the Cancer Biology Genetics
Program at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Before microchips are implanted on a large scale in humans, he said,
testing should be done on larger animals, such as dogs or monkeys. "I
mean, these are bad diseases. They are life-threatening. And given the
preliminary animal data, it looks to me that there's definitely cause
for concern."
Dr. George Demetri, director of the Center for Sarcoma and Bone Oncology
at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, agreed. Even though the
tumor incidences were "reasonably small," in his view, the research
underscored "certainly real risks" in RFID implants.
In humans, sarcomas, which strike connective tissues, can range from the
highly curable to "tumors that are incredibly aggressive and can kill
people in three to six months," he said.
At the Jackson Laboratory in Maine, a leader in mouse genetics research
and the initiation of cancer, Dr. Oded Foreman, a forensic pathologist,
also reviewed the studies at the AP's request.
At first he was skeptical, suggesting that chemicals administered in
some of the studies could have caused the cancers and skewed the
results. But he took a different view after seeing that control mice,
which received no chemicals, also developed the cancers. "That might be
a little hint that something real is happening here," he said. He, too,
recommended further study, using mice, dogs or non-human primates.
Dr. Cheryl London, a veterinarian oncologist at Ohio State University,
noted: "It's much easier to cause cancer in mice than it is in people.
So it may be that what you're seeing in mice represents an exaggerated
phenomenon of what may occur in people."
Tens of thousands of dogs have been chipped, she said, and veterinary
pathologists haven't reported outbreaks of related sarcomas in the area
of the neck, where canine implants are often done. (Published reports
detailing malignant tumors in two chipped dogs turned up in AP's
four-month examination of research on chips and health. In one dog, the
researchers said cancer appeared linked to the presence of the embedded
chip; in the other, the cancer's cause was uncertain.)
Nonetheless, London saw a need for a 20-year study of chipped canines
"to see if you have a biological effect." Dr. Chand Khanna, a veterinary
oncologist at the National Cancer Institute, also backed such a study,
saying current evidence "does suggest some reason to be concerned about
tumor formations."
Meanwhile, the animal study findings should be disclosed to anyone
considering a chip implant, the cancer specialists agreed.
To date, however, that hasn't happened.
,,,
The product that VeriChip Corp. won approval for use in humans is an
electronic capsule the size of two grains of rice. Generally, it is
implanted with a syringe into an anesthetized portion of the upper arm.
When prompted by an electromagnetic scanner, the chip transmits a unique
code. With the code, hospital staff can go on the Internet and access a
patient's medical profile that is maintained in a database by VeriChip
Corp. for an annual fee.
VeriChip Corp., whose parent company has been marketing radio tags for
animals for more than a decade, sees an initial market of diabetics and
people with heart conditions or Alzheimer's disease, according to a
Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
The company is spending millions to assemble a national network of
hospitals equipped to scan chipped patients.
But in its SEC filings, product labels and press releases, VeriChip
Corp. has not mentioned the existence of research linking embedded
transponders to tumors in test animals.
When the FDA approved the device, it noted some Verichip risks: The
capsules could migrate around the body, making them difficult to
extract; they might interfere with defibrillators, or be incompatible
with MRI scans, causing burns. While also warning that the chips could
cause "adverse tissue reaction," FDA made no reference to malignant
growths in animal studies.
Did the agency review literature on microchip implants and animal
cancer?
Dr. Katherine Albrecht, a privacy advocate and RFID expert, asked
shortly after VeriChip's approval what evidence the agency had reviewed.
When FDA declined to provide information, she filed a Freedom of
Information Act request. More than a year later, she received a letter
stating there were no documents matching her request.
"The public relies on the FDA to evaluate all the data and make sure the
devices it approves are safe," she says, "but if they're not doing that,
who's covering our backs?"
Late last year, Albrecht unearthed at the Harvard medical library three
studies noting cancerous tumors in some chipped mice and rats, plus a
reference in another study to a chipped dog with a tumor. She forwarded
them to the AP, which subsequently found three additional mice studies
with similar findings, plus another report of a chipped dog with a
tumor.
Asked if it had taken these studies into account, the FDA said VeriChip
documents were being kept confidential to protect trade secrets. After
AP filed a FOIA request, the FDA made available for a phone interview
Anthony Watson, who was in charge of the VeriChip approval process.
"At the time we reviewed this, I don't remember seeing anything like
that," he said of animal studies linking microchips to cancer. A
literature search "didn't turn up anything that would be of concern."
In general, Watson said, companies are expected to provide
safety-and-effectiveness data during the approval process, "even if it's
adverse information."
Watson added: "The few articles from the literature that did discuss
adverse tissue reactions similar to those in the articles you provided,
describe the responses as foreign body reactions that are typical of
other implantable devices. The balance of the data provided in the
submission supported approval of the device."
Another implantable device could be a pacemaker, and indeed, tumors have
in some cases attached to foreign bodies inside humans. But Dr. Neil
Lipman, director of the Research Animal Resource Center at Memorial
Sloan-Kettering, said it's not the same. The microchip isn't like a
pacemaker that's vital to keeping someone alive, he added, "so at this
stage, the payoff doesn't justify the risks."
Silverman, VeriChip Corp.'s chief executive, disagreed. "Each month pet
microchips reunite over 8,000 dogs and cats with their owners," he said.
"We believe the VeriMed Patient Identification System will provide
similar positive benefits for at-risk patients who are unable to
communicate for themselves in an emergency."
,,,
And what of former HHS secretary Thompson?
When asked what role, if any, he played in VeriChip's approval, Thompson
replied: "I had nothing to do with it. And if you look back at my
record, you will find that there has never been any improprieties
whatsoever."
FDA's Watson said: "I have no recollection of him being involved in it
at all." VeriChip Corp. declined comment.
Thompson vigorously campaigned for electronic medical records and
healthcare technology both as governor of Wisconsin and at HHS. While in
President Bush's Cabinet, he formed a "medical innovation" task force
that worked to partner FDA with companies developing medical information
technologies.
At a "Medical Innovation Summit" on Oct. 20, 2004, Lester Crawford, the
FDA's acting commissioner, thanked the secretary for getting the agency
"deeply involved in the use of new information technology to help
prevent medication error." One notable example he cited: "the
implantable chips and scanners of the VeriChip system our agency
approved last week."
After leaving the Cabinet and joining the company board, Thompson
received options on 166,667 shares of VeriChip Corp. stock, and options
on an additional 100,000 shares of stock from its parent company,
Applied Digital Solutions, according to SEC records. He also received
$40,000 in cash in 2005 and again in 2006, the filings show.
The Project on Government Oversight called Thompson's actions
"unacceptable" even though they did not violate what the independent
watchdog group calls weak conflict-of-interest laws.
"A decade ago, people would be embarrassed to cash in on their
government connections. But now it's like the Wild West," said the
group's executive director, Danielle Brian.
Thompson is a partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, a
Washington law firm that was paid $1.2 million for legal services it
provided the chip maker in 2005 and 2006, according to SEC filings.
He stepped down as a VeriChip Corp. director in March to seek the GOP
presidential nomination, and records show that the company gave his
campaign $7,400 before he bowed out of the race in August.
In a TV interview while still on the board, Thompson was explaining the
benefits , and the ease , of being chipped when an interviewer
interrupted:
"I'm sorry, sir. Did you just say you would get one implanted in your
arm?"
"Absolutely," Thompson replied. "Without a doubt."
"No concerns at all?"
"No."
But to date, Thompson has yet to be chipped himself.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 19, 20007
CASPIAN RELEASES MICROCHIP CANCER REPORT
Sets record straight after misleading claims by HomeAgain and VeriChip
implant manufacturers
A new paper titled "Microchip-Induced Tumors in Laboratory Rodents and
Dogs: A Review of the Literature 1990-2006" has been released today by
CASPIAN. The full, 48-page paper provides a definitive review of the
academic literature showing a causal link between implanted
radio-frequency (RFID) microchip transponders and cancer in laboratory
rodents and dogs. In addition, a brief, four-page synopsis of the full
report is being made available.
Eleven articles previously published in toxicology and pathology
journals are evaluated in the report. In six of the articles, between
0.8% and 10.2% of laboratory mice and rats developed malignant tumors
around or adjacent to the microchips, and several researchers suggested
the actual tumor rate may have been higher. Two additional articles
reported microchip-related cancer in dogs.
In almost all cases, the malignant tumors, typically sarcomas, arose at
the site of the implants and grew to surround and fully encase the
devices. In several cases the tumors also metastasized or spread to
other parts of the animals.
Public revelation of a casual link between microchipping and cancer in
animals has prompted widespread public concern over the safety of
implantable microchips. The story was first broken to the public in
September through an article written by Associated Press Reporter Todd
Lewan. Prior to the AP story, the journal articles were completely
unknown outside of small academic circles.
"The AP did a superb job informing the public of the existence of these
journal articles," said Dr. Katherine Albrecht, a leading privacy expert
and long-time VeriChip opponent who authored the new paper.
"Unfortunately," Dr. Albrecht added, "a lot of misinformation about the
cancer research has circulated since Mr. Lewan's article was published.
I wrote the report to set the record straight."
The animal-microchip study findings were so compelling that one of Mr.
Lewan's sources, Dr. Robert Benezra, head of the Cancer Biology Genetics
Program at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, was
quoted as saying, "There's no way in the world, having read this
information, that I would have one of those chips implanted in my skin,
or in one of my family members."
Nevertheless, representatives of the chipping industry have made
inaccurate public statements about the research findings in an effort to
confuse the public.
Scott Silverman, CEO of the VeriChip Corporation which makes the
controversial VeriChip human implant, recently provided inaccurate
information to Time Magazine. Mr. Silverman is quoted as saying that
none of the tumors found in mice in a 2006 French study were malignant.
In fact, not only were the tumors malignant sarcomas, but most of the
afflicted animals died prematurely as a result of the
microchip-associated tumors.
In addition, Destron Fearing, makers of the HomeAgain pet implant,
dismissed a finding of fibrosarcoma--a highly lethal cancer--as
'benign' in a recent report.
A fibrosarcoma is a type of sarcoma, a malignant tumor of soft tissue
that connects, supports or surrounds other structures and organs of the
body. Dr. Timothy Jennings, an expert on implant-induced cancers in
humans, said he was "not aware of any nosology incorporating an entity
of 'benign fibrosarcoma'" and agreed that "any tumor classified as
sarcoma should be viewed as malignant."
"Either VeriChip and the makers of HomeAgain actually don't understand
the difference between a benign fibroma and a malignant fibrosarcoma,"
noted Dr. Albrecht, "or they're deliberately lying to the public. Either
way, it's clear they can't be trusted. We hope our new report will set
the record straight."
The report includes a one- to three-page writeup on each of the original
studies. In addition to a detailed review of the academic literature,
the report contains recommendations for patients, pet owners,
veterinarians, and policy makers, including the following: (1) Further
microchipping of humans should be immediately discontinued; (2)
Implanted patients should be informed in writing of the research
findings and offered a procedure for microchip removal; and (3) Policy

Hi, all:
I am about to leave for Phoenix, where I and other advocates will be
briefing the Arizona state legislature on privacy issues associated with
new remotely-readable, spychipped "enhanced" driver's licenses. If you
are in the area, you are invited to join us on Thursday evening for a
public town hall meeting on the topic sponsored by the Arizona ACLU
tomorrow night.
As you may know, several states, including Arizona, Washington, Vermont,
and New York have agreed to issue the RFID-tagged cards for
border-crossing purposes. The idea is that state residents who
voluntarily pay an extra $40 to receive the remotely-trackable cards
will be allowed to cross more "efficiently" into Canada or Mexico, since
border officials will see them coming before they reach the guard
station.
To anyone who's clued in about RFID, the spychipped driver's licenses
are a complete privacy nightmare, however. They can be silently read
from 20-feet away, through a person's wallet, pocket, backpack, or purse
-- even when the target is in a moving car. They are unencrypted and
contain a unique ID number that can be used to identify and track people
miles from the border -- indeed, anywhere the government chooses to put
a reader.
But it's not just the government that could use the cards to track and
surveil people. Anyone with a rudimentary RFID reader can remotely
access the the unique ID number on the card. Retailers could use them to
ID customers as they walk in the door. Marketers could use them to track
people around the store. Stalkers could use them to track their victims.
Terrorists could scan for them in crowds and pinpoint Americans
traveling in other countries. Hackers could duplicate the signal emitted
by chipped licenses to impersonate people. The list of potential abuses
for the ill-conceived ID card are staggering.
If you are in Phoenix and would like to learn more, the ACLU is hosting
a Town Hall Meeting tomorrow evening (Thursday, 3/13) at 7:00 PM at the
University of Arizona. I will deliver a PowerPoint presentation on
RFID-tagged ID cards and sign books after the event, so be sure to bring
your copy of Spychips (or you can pick one up while you're there).
The event is free and open to the public. Further details are available
below my signature,
or on-line here: http://www.acluaz.org/News/PressReleases/3_10_08.html
If you cannot attend in person, please send your prayers and well wishes
with us to the state of Arizona, as we work to inform the public about
the encroaching police state.
In freedom,
Katherine Albrecht, Ed.D.

Scary stuff on the read. I am back with Nick, we use at work. Door entry to secure areas. The thing is the size of a keyfob and has a tiny range of waving it at the unit. No tracking capabiltiies, just the ID work. THAT use of RFID I can agree with and have no problem there. The rest of the stuff in the thread just scares me. _________________ For this is the place

Yes they are totally crackable in more way then just these three methouds.
typical rfid has a radio signal broadcasting out. a small rfid chip that rebounds the same signal back with its own signal generated by the carrior wave first sent.
its totally posible to mimic the signal with your own broasdcast signal and not even need a card.
these things are totally insecure. _________________ RFID tags! SPYWARE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 13, 2008
Protest Today Against RFID in Clothing and Shoes
RFID WHERE? You'd better look at your shoes, socks and underwear!
Protesters will gather today in Manhattan to greet attendees of the
third annual "RFID in Fashion" conference, an event organized to promote
the use of RFID in clothing and footwear. Dr. Katherine Albrecht, the
Harvard-educated privacy campaigner featured in the film "Freedom to
Fascism" and co-author of the bestselling book "Spychips," will be
on-hand to speak to attendees arriving for the opening keynote this
afternoon at NYC's Fashion Institute of Technology.
The conference features two days of speeches and events to advance
apparel-industry uses for controversial Radio Frequency Identification
or RFID technology. Past attendees include New Balance Athletic Shoes,
Reebok, Levi Strauss, American Apparel, Liz Claiborne, and Jockey, along
with retail outlets The Limited, Timberland, and Dillard's.
Albrecht planned today's protest after discovering the conference would
promote the use of RFID in individual clothing items. Known as
"item-level tagging," the practice of placing RFID tags on consumer
items (rather than on crates or pallets in a warehouse) has been widely
condemned by privacy and security experts.
Experts caution that such tags pose huge privacy and safety risks to the
public. Used to track inventory in warehouses, RFID tags can easily be
used to track people as well – a fact that can be exploited by
marketers, government agencies, and criminals. IBM, for example, has
patented RFID "person tracking units" for placement in walls and floors
to allow marketers and government agents to secretly monitor people's
movements. They suggest using the devices in public spaces like shopping
malls, theaters, elevators, and restrooms once RFID is implemented at
the item level.
"Consumers shouldn't have to worry about tracking devices being sewn
into the seams of their clothing or pressed into the soles of their
shoes," said Albrecht. "We are putting apparel and RFID companies on
notice that consumers will protest any item-level use of RFID on
apparel."
In 2003, Albrecht's consumer group CASPIAN led a successful boycott
against Italian clothing manufacturer Benetton. The resulting worldwide
opposition forced the company to cancel plans to sew millions of RFID
tags into women's garments.
"Consumer awareness and opposition to RFID has grown exponentially since
2003," Albrecht said. "Any U.S. company foolish enough to use RFID on
apparel will face stiff repercussions."

it allso seems a major bank in canada is rfiding credit cards with no choice to opt out of them.
the info on the rfid chip is mostly encripted but took a few minuets to brake the encryption.
and read all info on it.
and its possible to scan these cards easily from 5-10 feet
will be putting it in microwave oven on hi and nuke it only safe way to have one.
you can apparently get metal covers for credit cards. not seen any available.
if you wade through past posts you will find the range of rfid reading can be done much father away.
and with poor encryption on them they are another way to make you poor very quick!!! _________________ RFID tags! SPYWARE

Dear CASPIAN Members and Radio Listeners:
In a radio exclusive, I will interview Lori Ginsberg on my show today
(see my press release below). She is the California woman who watched
helplessly as her six-month-old dog died in her arms last week after
being subjected to a mandatory microchip implant.
We need to support Lori and her husband Ed as they overcome their grief
and work to make positive changes in the law. Please join me for my
radio program this afternoon and call in with your messages of
condolence and support.
The program will air from 4-6 PM Eastern time. Details on how you can
listen to the show live on the Internet are posted at the bottom of this
email. The call-in phone to send your support # is (800) 259-9231.
Thank you in advance for your support.
In freedom and in Christ,
Katherine Albrecht, Ed.D.

Dog Bleeds to Death After "Routine" Microchip Implant Procedure
Grieving owner calls for an end to mandatory microchipping in Los
Angeles
A fluffy bundle of life, love, and enthusiasm named Charlie Brown was
laid to rest last week, the victim of a microchip implant gone horribly
wrong. The long-haired, purebred Chihuahua bled to death in the arms of
his distraught owners, Lori and Ed Ginsberg of Agua Dulce, California,
just hours after undergoing the controversial chipping procedure.
"I wasn't in favor of getting Charlie chipped, but it was the law," said
Lori Ginsberg, citing a Los Angeles county ordinance that requires all
dog owners to chip their dogs once they reach four months of age. Dog
owners who refuse to comply face a $250 fine for the first offense and
up to six months in jail for continued non-compliance. "This technology
is supposedly so great until it's your animal that dies," she said. "I
can't believe Charlie is gone. I'm just beside myself."
Dr. Reid Loken, the board certified veterinarian who performed the
chipping, confirmed on Friday that Charlie died from blood loss
associated with the microchip. He cited "an extreme amount of bleeding"
from the "little hole in the skin where the [microchip implant] needle
went in" as the cause of death. He said he was both saddened and puzzled
by Charlie's death.
"I just don't know what happened to him. We put the chip in the back in
the shoulder blades, the standard place where we put them, and there
really aren't any major blood vessels in that area," he said. "I don't
think it went in too deep; it was a pretty routine chipping."
Dr. Loken suspected the needle may have nicked the muscle around the
scapula, causing blood to ooze from the muscle. However, his efforts to
stem the bleeding with pressure bandages were unsuccessful. The bleeding
could not be attributed to a congenital clotting problem, he said, since
Charlie had undergone a neutering and tooth extraction without incident
just weeks before.
Charlie's owners were devastated by the loss. "Charlie loved to play and
cuddle. He brought so much joy and life to our home," said Lori. "We
loved him and took such good care of him. He meant everything to us."
The Ginsbergs were quick to absolve Dr. Loken of responsibility for
Charlie's death. "He's a great vet and this was not his fault. The real
blame is with the people who forced us to implant our dog against our
better judgment," they said.
The Ginsbergs plan to petition the Los Angeles County Board of
Supervisors to repeal the mandatory chipping law, and have sought the
help of prominent consumer privacy advocate Dr. Katherine Albrecht.
Albrecht is a Harvard-trained researcher who has authored a definitive
academic paper citing literature that links microchips with cancer in
dogs as well as laboratory animals. She has also authored an exhaustive,
47-page FAQ on microchip implants.
Albrecht cites other adverse reactions stemming from microchips in the
past. In one case, a struggling kitten died instantly when a microchip
was accidentally injected into its brain stem. In another, a cat was
paralyzed when an implant entered its spinal column. The implants have
been widely reported to migrate within animals' bodies, and can cause
abscesses and infection. In at least two documented cases, dogs have
developed cancerous tumors surrounding or adjacent to microchip
implants.
"Tragedies like what happened to Charlie Brown are probably more common
than we like to think," said Albrecht. "But it takes courageous people
like the Ginsbergs to come forward and talk about it."
Albrecht and the Ginsbergs are calling for a repeal of all mandatory
animal chipping laws nationwide, and for the creation of a national
registry to document adverse reactions from the chipping procedure.
"It's horrible to live in a country where your choices are being take
away and you don't get to make decisions about your family and your life
anymore," said Lori Ginsberg. "Politicians should not take away my right
to do what I thought was best for my pet."
