Hello, I'm glad I found this website! For the past few days I
keep getting spyware popup windows, I can't stop them!
I have all of the windows updates for security.
I downloaded/installed/updated and ran Ad-Aware SE Pro and it
finds "elitehxw32.exe" but when I remove that file, it keeps coming
back. I also downloaded/installed/updated and ran Spybot - Search
& Destroy and it found "Elitum.EliteBar" but when I remove that
file, it also keeps coming back! I found a program on the Internet
called "ETRmvV11B" (it is an Elite Toolbar Remover)--I ran that and
it said Elite Toolbar has been removed but I still have the
"elitehxw32.exe in my startup programs. I hope somebody can help
me, I don't know how to backup registry files or anything, so please
use layman's terms if you can help me. Here is my current HijackThis Log:

Won't someone please help me, I have all kinds of
popups coming up on my screen and I think it's from
that "elitehxw32.exe" program in my startup programs.
I'm tempted to do the "fix it" thing in the HighjackThis
for it but I'm afraid I might screw things up worse than
they are. I just did a new Highjack This Log, PLEASE
help:

I just ran this: XBlock & SpywareInfo online scanner
It found about 10 spyware files and I clicked the "remove"
button for each of them. Then I rebooted and showed
open files and ran another Highjack This Log (I'm still
getting popups can't someone help me?):

Seeing only this one entry is very odd.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [etbrun] C:\windows\system32\elitehxw32.exe
I'd like to have a look at a few other things please.
Post a startuplist please. In Hijackthis press the Config Button
Click Misc Tools
Check both boxes under the Generate StartupList log and then click the generate startuplist log button.
Paste the contents into your next reply here.
Download
FindQoologic-Narrator.zip
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=134981
Extract the folder and then run the .bat file inside the folder. It will open a log in notepad. Please copy and paste the contents of that log into your next reply as well. |

Hello Mosaic, thank you very much for taking the time to help me!
Yesterday I again ran Ad-Aware SE Pro and it found some Ebates crap.
I have Ad-Aware delete them but when I run Ad-Aware again they are
back. When I run Spybot Search & Destroy, it does not find them,
it only finds Elitum.EliteBar and I remove it but it keeps coming back. Ad-Aware finds 6 Regvalues and 1 Regkey.
I downloaded/unzipped the Find_Qoologic2 file, but when I open the folder
I'm not sure which file to click. There are 4 files: Activesetup, getstarts,
Find-Qoologic2, XFIND. I don't want to click/run the wrong thing so I need
to know which one is the bat file that you want me to run.
I ran Hijackthis and got the StartupList Log like you wanted:

I odn[t see any indicaton of qoologic in your startuplist but you can run it anyway and post the results.
Run find qoologic.bat
Then please do this:
Go to start >Run and type
cmd
Press enter.
Copy this command and then right click in the command window and select paste from the menu.
| Code: |
| dir C:\windows\system32\elite*.exe >elite.txt |
When it has finished, type elite.txt to start the text file. Copy and paste the contents of elite.txt into your next reply too please. |

I tried to run Find-Qoologic2 but when I click it my Norton AntiVirus
gives me a window saying "MALICIOUS SCRIPT DETECTED".
Then it asks me if I want to stop this script (recommended) so
I stopped it. It doesn't show a log or anything to save.
Here is what I copied from the elite.txt that you wanted:
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 584D-ED12

Norton always says that about all scripts. This one is safe, though.
You only have that one file?
I wonder if you should go ahead and do this>
Open Hijackthis.
Click the Config button.
Click the Misc Tools button.
then click the Delete a file on reboot button.
This will open a dialog. Guide it to:
C:\windows\system32\elitehxw32.exe
After you have finished, Go back, scan and remove the run entry you found earlier for the file.
Then reboot. Run Hijackthis ad post the new log. See how that goes. |

Hi Mosaic, I don't understand what to do here:
"After you have finished, Go back, scan and remove the run entry you found earlier for the file."
Go back to where? Scan with what, Ad-Aware & Spybot?
Also, I'm not sure which run entry that I found earlier that
you are referring to. I'm sorry, I just don't want to make
any mistakes.
I ran the qoologic.bat and got this:
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL FILES FOUND BY THIS METHOD ARE NOT BAD FILES, THERE MIGHT BE LEGIT FILES LISTED AND PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHILE FIXING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF WHAT IT IS LEAVE THEM ALONE.

Sorry. Use Hijackthis.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [etbrun] C:\windows\system32\elitehxw32.exe
Those results are clear. No qoologic seems to be present.
I am going to leave for several hours but will be back later. |

I went to Hijackthis/misc tools button/delete a file on reboot
button. I clicked on C, Windows, System32. There are LOTS
of files in the System32 folder but there are none beginning
with "eli". I looked at every file and then I looked for ".exe"
file types, typed in "eli..." in the OPEN, nothing. Then I closed
Hijackthis. Went to Start, My Computer, Tools, Folder Options,
View:
I checked: Display system folders.
Show hidden files and folders.
I unchecked: Hide extensions for known file types.
Hide protected operating system files.
Clicked Apply, OK. Opened Hijackthis and looked for elitehxw32.exe
again in C/Windows/System32 but it isn't there. I looked at every file in there but there is no elitehxw32.exe. I have searched for
that file in the past but the search results always say "no files found". I know it's supposed to be in there. I just clicked Start,
Run, Msconfig, Startup and it shows elitehxw32.exe is running right now. |

Hi Mosaic, I've been searching the Internet for information about
the Elite Spyware that I'm infected with. A few days ago I found a
program called "ETRmvV11B" (Elite Toolbar Remover version 11B).
I downloaded and ran it but it didn't get rid of my Elite Spyware.
I just now found what is supposedly the newest version of Elite
Toolbar Remover (version 1.2) here:
http://www.simplytech.it/ETRemover/
From what I've read about Elite Spyware, everybody has a lot of
trouble getting rid of it because it renames itself on each reboot
and that makes it almost impossible to find (from what I understand
about it). Do you think I should run this Elite Toolbar Remover v1.2?
It says I should download it, then reboot in safe mode, then run the
program. What do you think? |

Ok, I thought you ran that already. Yes. DO get he latest version. But first when you are in safe mode run hijackthis and see what the name of the file in the run entry has been changed to. Save the log as Safe Mode log. Fix that entry.
See if you can find it and delete using the Killbox.
Then do run that utility.
Restart into regular windows.
Run hijackthis, Post you logs. All of them. |

IT'S GONE!!! IT'S GONE!!! I used the Elite Toolbar Remover v1.2
and it got rid of the elithxw32.exe from my startup programs!!!
Oh man it was great to see that thing gone!!! I still got problems
though--I rebooted a couple times to make sure that it would not
return in my startup programs, I looked and it wasn't there so I started running Ad-Aware and Spybot. Ad-Aware found 24 spyware items and I clicked to remove them. Then I rebooted
(still no elithxw32.exe in my startup programs). Then I went on the
Internet and ran Ad-Aware again. It found 2 cookies, 1 was elitutopia (can't remember the other one). I removed them. Ran Spybot and Spybot said "Congratulations, no spyware!". I was getting ready to tell you the good news and I looked at my startup programs again and that's when it came back--The box was checked for elithxw32.exe in my startup programs!! Damn!! So I unchecked it and rebooted, looked at my startup programs and it was unchecked. I've been keeping an eye on it ever since and it hasn't reappeared but I think it is because I have cookies turned off while I'm on the Internet. I think maybe a cookie turns on that elithxw32.exe program in my startup programs, I don't know for sure though, I'm still testing different things to see what caused it to reappear. Can you see anything out of the ordinary with my current Hijackthis Log? Any ideas of what I should look for that put a check in the box for elithxw32.exe? Thanks again, Mosaic!

Let's have a look at something else too, your disabled startups.
Copy the contents of the code box to Notepad. Save in its own folder as disabled.bat
Save as Type: All files
Double click on disabled.bat to run it.
This will create and open a text file named disabled starts.txt
Copy and paste the contents of that file into your next reply here.
| Code: |
@echo off
MkDir "disabled texts"
reg Export "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Msconfig\Startupfolder" "disabled texts\disabled.txt"
reg Export "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Msconfig\startupreg" "disabled texts\disabled startups.txt"
Copy "disabled texts\*.txt" = "disabled starts.txt"
del "disabled texts\*.*" /Q
RmDir "Disabled texts"
Start Notepad "disabled starts.txt"

Have you cleaned your cookies folder yet? I would use Internet Options and wipe all the cookies. That will mean when you go anywhere, you'll jave to sign in until your cookies are back.
And we'll also update some of your security settings shortly.
Run that other batch I gave you earlier too to be sure there are no Elite files left.
Use Hijackthis to fix these:

GEEZES YOU'RE KEEPING ME BUSY!! HAHAHA just kidding! I'm sure glad you're around here helping me!! When I delete all of my cookies should I also delete the "INDEX DAT File" that is in the cookies folder? I don't remember or see anything about running a batch to see if I have any elite files. How should I do that (sorry if I missed it). I will fix those 2 items that you listed with hijackthis now. Here is the disabled starts:

I don't see anything about a batch for seeing if I have any more elite files Mosaic and I never deleted all of my cookies before so
I need to know if I should delete the INDEX DAT File also...I guess
I should delete all temp folders and files too, the only way I know
how to do that is START, MY COMPUTER, RIGHT CLICK C, PROPERTIES, DISK CLEANUP, then have TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES and TEMPORARY FILES checked. I think there are other temp files but I don't know where they are. I fixed those 2 files that you listed with Hijackthis and this is my current Hijackthis log:

Leave the index.dat in place.
But then go over to Internet options.
Look at the Temporary Internet Files section in the middle of that page. Click the Delete Cookies Button.
Sorry. That was a command and not a batch. HEre are those directions again.
Copy this command and then right click in the command window and select paste from the menu.
| Code: |
dir C:\windows\system32\elite*.exe >elite.txt
|
When it has finished, type elite.txt to start the text file. Copy and paste the contents of elite.txt into your next reply.
I'll be back after I look at your other file. |

The log looks clean.
You have disabled startups from some nasties.
They do nothing because they don't start. But I would like to be sure we remove them and also to be sure the files and folders mentioned have been removed.
Look for this folder and two files. If you find them, delete them.
C:\Program Files\rb32
This file: Likely not there.
C:\windows\system32\elitehxw32.exe
And this one:
C:\WINDOWS\avserve2.exe
Copy the contents of the Code Box to notepad.
Name as Clear.reg
Save as Type: All Files
Double click on Clear.reg and say yes to the prompt to enter into the registry.
| Code: |
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Msconfig\startupreg\avserve2.exe]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Msconfig\startupreg\etbrun]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Msconfig\startupreg\rb32 lptt01] |

I deleted all of my cookies in my cookies folder (2,252!) and I
did not delete the INDEX 272KB DAT File. Then I went to Internet
Options, Temporary Internet Files, clicked the Delete Cookies
button. I will look at your previous message and do what it says.
I think I have bad news, it looks like elithxw32.exe is still on my
computer
Volume in drive C has no label.

Try to delete the file and see if it goes.
Restart and have another look for that type of file using the command.
Check for a startup using Hijackthis again.
We need to monitor for file creation to see if it is coming back and then see if we can figure it out. |

I wanted to reboot because I thought I should after deleting all
those cookies. So I Logged off the Internet and just for the heck
of it I looked in my cookies folder and ALL of the cookies that I
Had deleted were back in the cookies folder. I deleted them again
and rebooted and looked in the cookies folder and they were still
gone after the reboot. I Logged back onto the Internet and looked
in the cookies folder and they are ALL back in the cookies folder
now. I'm going to have to call it a night my friend. Tomorrow I
do things that you wrote. I just remembered that the Elite Toolbar
Remover can be ran in normal mode. It says you should run it
in Safe mode but that it can also be ran in Normal mode, so I'll
do that tomorrow also and hopefully it will find that elitehxw32.exe
file. Any idea what's causing all of my cookies to reappear? |

Good question.
If you have another profile on the system log off and on to it.
Then delete the cookies foider in your profile and the entire Temporary internet folder.
You'll find cookies in:
C:\documents and settings\your user name
Temorary internet will be here:
C:\documents and settings\your user name\Local Settings
See if that helps. |

Hi Mosaic, I thought I'd take a look in Windows/System32 for that
elitehxw32.exe file before I go to bed and guess what.................
IT WAS THERE!! So I deleted it then I ran that cmd to look for it
and it didn't find it this time so I guess it's gone for good now:
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 584D-ED12
Directory of C:\windows\system32
I just looked in windows\system32 again for elitehxw32.exe and
it isn't there anymore. I think we got rid of it for good this time!
I will do the instructions that you wrote in your previous messages
tomorrow. Have a great night, I really appreciate all this help
that you have given me! |

Hi Mosaic,
I am the only user on this computer. When I go to
"Users" it shows my name (Rich) and Guest and it
says that Guest is turned off. This morning I deleted
all of the cookies again and rebooted. Then I deleted
a lot of folders/files/icons that were on my Desktop.
Then I removed a couple programs from Add/Remove
Programs. Then I rebooted, cookies were still gone.
I got on the Internet and ALL of the cookies came
back when I logged onto the Internet. I have two
Cookies Folders. One is in Documents and Settings/
Administrator and the other is in Documents and
Settings/Rich. The Administrator/Cookies folder
never has any cookies in it but it has an INDEX DAT
File 16KB--That DAT File and the DAT File in Rich/
Cookies both open with my Music Match Jukebox--
That seems strange to me. When I right click and
click properties they both say:
Type of File: Dat File
Opens with: MusicMatch Jukebox
When I left click the DAT Files, my MusicMatch
Jukebox opens but it doesn't play anything and
there's no information about it.
I went to START, SEARCH, Local Hard Drive (C and
in subfolders and entered RB32. It found "regLocal",
when I point to it it says: In folder C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search &
Destroy\Backups
Type: Registration Entries
Date Modified: 4/3/05 8:51AM
Size: 14.8MB
I searched in C:\Windows for avserve2.exe but it didn't
find anything.
I ran the Clear.reg and said "Yes" to the prompt. Then
I rebooted, got back on the Internet, ran Hijackthis Log.
I have no idea why those cookies keep coming back when
I sign on or off the Internet. My computer seems to be
running faster and smoother!
This is my current Hijackthis Log:

I am leaning toward the index.dat file and that cannot be removed while you are signed on to that account. I could give you a command to enter into the registry for next boot, but do prefer that you create a new account. I always create a spare in the event mine becomes unbootable for some odd reason. This is My opinion only.
Plus it's easy to just sign into another account and delete the folders I mentioned.
In Control Panel >User Accounts it takes a few seconds to create a new User.
Dat files are not music files. I have a program which takes ovewr bin files too. But they really do not belong to it. Dats are used by various programs to store and retrieve information. They are not meant to be clicked on.
Search and destroy backs up before delete in the event of an error.
Hijackthis is still having trouble with this entry:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
Let's fix it manually.
Copy the contents of the code box to notepad.
Name the file Search hook.reg
Save as Type All Files
Double click on Search hook.reg and say yes to the prompt to enter into the registry.
| Code: |
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
"{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"="" |
Run hijackthis for yourself and see if the entry is now gone. It should be. |

Hi Mosaic, sorry I haven't been on the computer much since my
last post. This morning I got rid of the cookies! I searched for
"cookie" on my computer and found a folder in C:\Documents
and Settings\Rich\application data\Earthlink\6.0\<my email addy>
All of those cookies were there, I deleted them (but not the DAT
File), rebooted, signed on the Internet and they are still all gone.
I also set up another user account on my computer like you said
in case I ever need it.
I ran the Search hook like you said, answered yes to the prompt
to add it to registry, ran Hijackthis scan and it still showed that
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file) so I checked the box to fix it, after the fix it was gone. Then
I rebooted, logged onto the Internet, ran Hijackthis and it showed
that it was back again. So I checked the box to fix it again, again
it showed that it was gone. I rebooted, logged onto Internet, ran
Hijackthis and it is back again.
Still no cookies except for the websites that I visited recently that
I want (I have the "prompt me before adding cookies" on.
Still no elitehxw32.exe that I can see anywhere
I think I will update and run Ad-Aware & Spybot now.
Here is my current Hijackthis Log:

Great I didn't have any spyware found with Spybot and Ad-Aware
only found 1 spyware file, it was an old website address, said it
might/might not be spyware, I deleted it.
I searched on the Internet for "url searchook" and found some
info on it. They say there are a lot of people having the same
trouble with not being able to get rid of it. Here is a thread about
it: http://castlecops.com/postt46297.html I've been trying to
understand how to get rid of my urlsearchhook problem but I
don't understand how to and I don't want to take the chance of
deleting registry things on my own. If you know how fine, but it
looks like a big headache so if it's a lot of trouble let's forget
about urlsearchhook, ok?
Have to leave for a few hours talk with you later.
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}_ - (no file) is a pretty common kind of 'damage' left over by hijackers (hense the 5000+ hits by google). Usually just removing all the entries in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks key and putting in the right one (with the null value) will clear them from your HJT log and fix the problem. In fact, I've never seen this not work before, but then I haven't been working in an anti-malware forum for very long either
I love this weird stuff though! Glad your system is OK, and have a beer on me! |

I just noticed that there is a slight difference with the urlsearchhook
that is in my hijackthis log and the one at the end of my previous
message. Mine looks like this:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
In my previous message, they mention one that looks like this:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}_ - (no file)
I think the "~" and the "-" makes a difference. |

Hi Mosaic, I searched the Internet again for URL SEARCHHOOK and
I found a lot of people who have the same problem of not being
able to get rid of that file, I read a lot of their posts but I didn't
find ANY who had a solution to get rid of that file. The closest
solution that I found is at the webpage that I wrote you a couple
messages ago. It looks like it's really going to be trouble getting
rid of that file, I'll leave it up to you as to what you think we should
do next. My computer is really running good now, what a relief,
I was a nervous wreck for half the week looking at all that spyware! Thanks again! |

Hi Richc,
You're welcome.
The cookie information is interesting. I'll have to make a note of that one.
The file I gave you did remove the key and then replace it with the correct information.
However, as I look closely at this from your log:
R3 - URLSearchHook: SrchHook Class - {44F9B173-041C-4825-A9B9-D914BD9DCBB3} - C:\Program Files\EarthLink TotalAccess\ElnIE.dll
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
I wonder if your Earthlink software is responsible here too. It is renaming and replacing the default search hook with its own. I say this because we removed the entire key but the Earthlink entry is present now. I bet it's Earthlink again. They are taking over your Search Hook and the cookies.
I would say don't worry about it.
Everything else looks fine.
Once you have rebooted a time or two, be sure everything is in working order. It is time to flush your system restore points. Once you do that you will not be able to correct any problems you may have now by going back to a point before today.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn off System restore.
Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.
----------------------------
Also here is an excellent source for tips to tighten security. Follow the advice and get the free downloads to help avoid some of these problems in the future.

Great, Mosaic! I just got through going to that security testing
website. I always get the windows updates. I set my security
settings to what they suggested at the website you gave me.
I downloaded/installed/updated/ran Spywareblaster. I down-
loaded/installed/updated/ran IE-SPYAD. The IE-SPYAD has the
Spywareblaster restricted sites and a lot of others. It suggested
that I uninstall the previous restricted sites before I install there's
so that's what I did. I have a ton of restricted sites to stop
spyware now. I did all of the Browser Security Tests (I passed
them all except 1 said there isn't much that anyone can do to
stop it). I think I will wait a couple days before I get rid of my
system restore points to make sure everything is running with
no problems. So far my computer is really running great, I can
sure tell the difference, it is faster and smoother than ever!
I'm sure glad I PM'ed you asking for your help and sure glad
you helped, you did more than fix my spyware problem, you
got my machine running great, YOU REALLY DO GOOD WORK!
Regards,
Rich |

Hi Rich,
You are very welcome and thank you for the compliments.
One other thing people are suggesting is to change your Main browser from IE and use an alternative.
Mozilla or opera for example. They are targetted less. However, as they become nore popular, attacks on these will increase.
