Hello and welcome to Spyware Warrior forums.

That was the good news. Shocked

The infection your poor friend has is called Bube(aka Win.32 Beavis).

It is currently the most difficult infection on the internet to remove, carrying with it in some variants(currently 6) of up to 100 other infections of varying degrees. Your friend is pretty infected.

There is only one security tool on the market currently which removes nearly all aspects of this infection, Kaspersky AV.

Below, you will find a tutorial for DLing a trial version of KAV and its subsequent set up. Set up is crucial, as if there is one step omitted or not done properly, the scan wil be comepletely ineffective.

KAV Install For Bube Removal

Once the app is DLed and installed and set, and then run, we also advise you to DL the new Microsoft Antispyware Beta product. It has proven to be very effective at dealing with some of the 'left overs' from this infection, as well as re-setting some registry points in relation to some crucial security points.

MS AntiSpyware Beta

Once it is DLed, check for updates, run a scan then, after thats done, post back a new HJT log, and we will see where we stand.

Good luck.

Did the Karpersky thing - Thanks, but still don't know if it is still O.K. Could you please check my log now and let me know? I think that this attack was pretty hardcore on my poor little computer:)
I am a little concerned over the "Trusted Zones" entries

WOW.................wellll, certainly seems the MS app did some cleaning up for sure.

Lets finish things up, and then we will need to check some security settings, as this Bube will change a bunch.

There is still one indication of a virus related item, so lets do a back up scan or two.

Exclamation Please head over to either Trend Micro or Panda ActiveScan and do an online, free, full system scan. Be sure and have the 'Auto Clean' button checked.
Trend Micro

Well, it would appear your log is now clear, we now need to check some security permissions which can sometimes be changed by this infection.

Quote:
I don't understand how I picked this up while still using all of my anti spyware software?

Simpley put, you just didn't have enough of the right sort of security apps in place. I will make some suggstions, which I strongly suggest you apply.

The following set of checks was also created by Calamity Jane.

Quote:
1. Download the attached file (FixReg.zip) Download it, unzip it and double click on it to merge with your registry.

/zx/CalamityJane/FixReg.zip

2. IE Security Zones -

Open regedit, browse to
\HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Setting\Zones\2, Change the value named "Flag" to decimal value 71.

Do the same for the
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Setting\Zones\2

You can now edit the trusted security zones in IE and set them back to
default.

You will want to click on each zone and restore default and also check
each zones Sites button to make sure all sites are removed.

3. http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

Internet Explorer Fix - is a general purpose repair utility for Internet Explorer which repairs Internet Explorer by registering it's core DLL files and through the INF file. Additionally if it detects Windows 2000/XP as the Operating System, it runs SFC to restore missing or corrupt Windows system files.

Now, to address some minor clean up, and more protection.

Arrow Be sure you either remove KAV or AVG, you cannot run 2 different avs.

Also don't see a firewall, please get one right away. Zone Alarm Firewall is one of the most popular, its free and easy to use.
XP SP2 firewall is not good enough.

We have 3 more things to do, to help ensure you have removed all the little 'leftovers' which may be hiding:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
Index.dat Suite

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion.

Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL these two apps, which are becoming the next one-two punch in the fight against ad/mal/spyware with AdAware & Spybot S&D:

Spyware Guard & Spyware Blaster
With Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, just DL, check for updates, enable protection, and your done!

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being installed on your machine inistall WinPatrol.

Tutorials for all the apps I mentioned can be found on my site as well.

Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
Calendar of Updates

Subscribe to update alerts for all the above security apps here.

Happy surfing!!
