|
|
From PC World Mag, April 2004, partial quote:
Next Designs for ads
The new ads--rather than the blockers--may eventually doom pop-ups. Some firms already offer rich-media ads that stream audio and video or scroll text and images across the screen. Online ad maker Unicast promotes full-screen video that shows television-quality ads in 15- or 30-second spots. Unicast's ads download a 2MB video file to a temporary cache and play only between Web pages or at a "logical break period," much like a TV ad, says Allie Savarino, Unicast senior vice president. The file won't affect PC performance, and users can always close it, Savarino adds.
She predicts that people will find these ads less intrusive than pop-ups. "The creative flexibility that this format gives advertisers allows them to deliver messages that consumers will tolerate," she says.
Whatever their form, online ads are here to stay. "We have to find a way to coexist with advertising," argues Charles Buchwalter, vice president of client analytics for Nielsen//NetRatings. That's because advertising pays the bills.
SpecificMedia's Vanderhook takes a more hostile view of ad avoidance: "Blocking pop-ups is almost like ripping off music online," he says. "When you go to ESPN.com every day, you enjoy its content for free. But it's not free; it's paid for by advertising."
Still, the pop-up wars continue. New technology will surely block new kinds of ads. EarthLink already lets customers block rich-media ads, and AOL plans to do the same by the time you read this.
According to some analysts, technological evolution should lead to better advertising, delivered in less intrusive, more manageable formats. In an environment where survival depends on adaptability, pop-ups may be headed for extinction.

I have seen those ads in many sites and they continue to take the place of the old pop-ups. All of a sudden my screen gets a transparent ad which not only is anoying but can only be closed if the ad ends, or if you can find the very hiden "close" button on it!! _________________ I say kill the bastards first and ask questions later!! |

I have Panicware free popup stopper, along with Google, and AdAware Plus has one too, tho, its too aggresive.
And my Norton System Works, ahse an AdBlocker as well. I get tons of pages with blank spots where ads should be, I love it! _________________

Except in my case. I've tweaked my security settings to control ActiveX which a lot of ads rely on, therefore, I get a lot of blank spots on websites where advertising normally is. I've also disabled my downloads. When I do need to download something, I simply enable them, download the program I need, then disable them again. This has saved my butt countless times. Often times I get an error message that says "your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded" when I'm just cruising the net with no intentions of downloading anything. |

Contrary to popular belief, not eveyone is on broadband, and a 2 meg file is intrusive for thos on dial up.
I have a 700 meg avi file, would those ad people like me to upload it to them? _________________ Nick's Security Ticker

When will these people understand we don't like pop-ups and now floating ads.
The net must be the only medium where we have to pay to see their ads, i.e. bandwidth cost, slow down of the net etc
What comes through the post we can bin without looking, ads on TV we can go to the loo, make tea etc.
On the net we physically have to get rid of them, if we don't have a pop up blocker, now we are going to have floating ads that we can't get rid of.
Well I for one can tell the young lady who said we will tolerate them, you're wrong, what it will do in fact is make sure that I never buy from a company that uses them. _________________ I'm not worried by insanity--I enjoy every minute of it

since I tend to stay away from sites that have pop-up spam I rarely get it even with little to no prevtion on my part.
this new wave coming will just mean I'm 100% more unlikely to revisit a site w/ this kind of add campaign.

OT slightly,
I've been wondering what I've been doing wrong,
I've been some threads on boards where someone was
saying that they receive up to 3,000 spam emails every week.
I've been getting the odd one,
Now i'm up to ten, memo to self must stop replying on these boards, just joking.
the b*******s have found me. _________________ I'm not worried by insanity--I enjoy every minute of it

linc you most likely don,t fill out web forums on sleezy or easy read by spam bot sights. first time your email is found out you will find out the hard way.
lets hope you don,t get spamed! _________________ RFID tags! SPYWARE

Linc, perhaps you don't do much of anything on eBay. I've been a powerseller there for several years now, and became aware that they do indeed sell email addresses by way of third party vendors (doubleclick, include, etc). Not to mention the deliberate harvesting of valid email addresses by way of the 'ask a member a question' page.
Mailwasher deletes about 80 spams every morning when I start this machine, then about one every 30 minutes or so during the day (set at 5 minute alerts). Peak spam times (for me) are between 4and 6am, and any time I have a series of auctions closing - the barstewards like to try to sneak their garbage in between eoa notices, but I'm watching carefully! _________________ Proud member of the Chest Zipper Club! |

thanks 3162, I guess I'm going to have to put it down to ebay, I was looking for a new monitor, got pipped at the post a few times, but I've now got a 19" iiyama, vision master, from a dealer a few miles away from where i live. for a good price £139.00.
trouble is I've now had to spend another £3.00 buying a small table to set the monitor on, it was too much in my face on my desk, will be arranging things tomorrow.
Was looking to buy a TFT, but the price has shot up,reason I was told "everybody wants one" never mind I'll wait a couple of years for them to come down in price. _________________ I'm not worried by insanity--I enjoy every minute of it
