I posted this in the Testing forum to check my new Avatar, and I remembed that I owe Suzi a Favicon that I said I would make for her.

These are my first attempts at such a SMALL sized image. I'll get it down to a science at some point.

If you can even tell what these are I feel good Mr. Green

Kewl - good start! I'm sure it's a real challenge to make such a small image and have it be easy to see.

I think the ones that are easiest to see use light or white backgrounds with a bright or darker color that's more visible.

Yeah, DFX, when I think of SpywareWarrior, I see Suzi's avatar.

'course, I liked the other avatar she used to use, too.

Radio, that's really, really kewl! Very Happy Big Thumb Up

I have no clue about how to use it as a favicon for the site though.

I'm glad you all like my avatar. Wink This one looks more like me than the warrior princess did. I liked that one but I got tired of it. There's a story behind it too - I was getting harrassed by some people who didn't like some things I said here and on my blog. I thought the warrior princess projected a better image of being armed and dangerous. Twisted Evil

if you want to use the one I converted...

save the sww.ico file, rename it to favicon.ico, then put it here: spywarewarrior.com/favicon.ico

Sorry, suzi, it's not showing up in my toolbar.

Do you have it on it's own page?

There are several favicons in my toolbar. I even made one for my marketing site (that I've almost abandoned! Rolling Eyes ) and it worked. I was very surprised.

Crap! I was really hoping to see it in the toolbar Sad

Empty your browser cache and see if that helps. It's not on a page - it should show up in the addres bar no matter what page you are on in the site.

If you save the site to your favorites, it will show up there too. Or it should. It's working for me.

Well, I'm not sure how to do that, as I don't think I ever have (probably have without even realizing it, though)

And I'm on FF too

Can't figure out why it doesn't show up here.

On my site, I just uploaded to the main directory and really didn't do anything to it as I didn't know what to do with it after that.

When I went to my site, it showed up, which is why I was so surprised.

It usually takes me many attempts to get something right! Rolling eyes

I don't suppose it would hurt, dave,.

What I did was clear the history in FF (I guess that is what Suzi meant when she was talking about the browser cache).

The Rogue page displays it for me and it works here too.

Hope this helps! Wink

I had to clear the cache (you would call it the Temp Internet Files in IE ) with firefox to get the emoticon to show. Firefox relies on the cache more than IE, so sometimes you won't get the most up to date version of a web page.

I just made a favicon for my org site and put it in the htdocs (which is the root or parent directory on my host) but it doesn't show.

I think I made it small enough: 30 x 25

Or is that too big? Anyone know?

Deb, I think it has to be 16 x 16 px file. And it has to be a .ico file.

This site tells all about favicons:

http://www.favicon.com/

Also since IE does not retain favicons very long in the favorites list, the is a program called favorg, (which used to be free when I got it, but I think it's not free anymore), that will search the web for the url's in your favorites and put the favicons back. It' a cool little program, but it can take quite a while to run if you have a few hundred favorites.

I was thinking it was too big Wink

Yes it is still free Suzi, just not at pcmag anymore.
I have it listed @ http://forum.avantbrowser.com in Off Topic Software Reviews.
I'll post it here tomorrow as it's late & if I log on there now I'll lose all unread posts by closing out or you can go there & get it

Well, I FINALLY got my favicon to show for me Smile

I did a goog on favicons and checked out a couple of sites for more info.

Changed the size to exactly 16x16 px (Irfanview kept preventing me from making both heighth and width the same til I figured out how to stop it). Then, I changed the colors to 16 bit, as one site suggested.

Named it favicon.ico and uploaded it to my root directory. Still wouldn't show, even though I cleared the history, as I had done when I was trying to see Suzi's.

Going back to the tools button, I found the cache that Nick had talked about. Duh-uhh! I have absolutely NO IDEA why I didn't see it before! Slap me upside the head and stand me in the corner.

And that did the trick!

It's a little dark though, but I don't care. I got the blasted thing there and I'm leaving it alone!!

Deb

PS I got so aggravated with it, I even sent an email to Steve, at UrIT-mate.co.uk asking what I might be doing wrong. He told me everything looked as it should, and mentioned the cache also, but since he doesn't use FF, didn't know where the cache was. That sent me on my little 'quest' and soon everything was fine.

No favicons are showing up in my address bar. Crying or Very sad

I ran favorg and they are all showing up in my favorites list, but I can't get any of them to show up in the address bar, not in IE or in Mozilla. I dumped the temp internet files, restarted but no luck.

Not even yours?

Seems I read somewhere that IE doesn't keep them for long.

Trying to find the link, but having no luck.

I cleared the cache in FF and that did the trick for me.
Tools/Options/Privacy/Cache

Don't know about IE since I rarely use it.

Note: I seem to be as lost as Dave! Laughing

Posted this originally in the wrong thread:

Maybe this will help.

Taken from this site:

http://www.4webhelp.net/tutorials/misc/favicons.php

Quote:

I used to see favicons, but now they've all disappeared. What happened?
Favicons are cached very similar to HTML documents. When they are deleted from the cache, they revert to the standard IE icon. If you want to prevent the icon from disappearing:

1. Create a local directory (i.e. c:\favicons)
2. Copy the desired favicon into the directory created above.
3. Right click the mouse over the favorite/bookmark and select properties.
4. Enter the path (or use the "Browse" feature) to the favicon you want for that bookmark.

Don't know if it works or not, just passing on the info.

Deb

Sorry guys, maybe I need to get a compass! Wink
