How did everyone do with the download and install process? For me, no real problems...yet. I'll update as necessary, but so far:

1. Be sure to turn the Spybot S&D Helper and Teatimer off before starting the process! Otherwise you'll be very busy!

2. My download size was 92.2mb, no problems in the download or installations save for aforementioned Spybot problem.

3. No apps borked as of yet, I'm hoping everything will be all right. Actually, since I'm currently wrestling with Linux, this Microsoft stuff is a piece of cake!

4. If you use a permission-based firewall such as ZoneAlarm, you will need to grant permission to Microsoft apps again after the update. Non-Microsoft apps appear to be unaffected.

5. The service pack makes backups and restore points for itself as it goes along. Pretty smart move.

6. The library in your Windows Media Player will be temporarily vanished when you next use it, but the update will search and find your files for you with no problems.

That's all I have so far.

I really need to have my HEAD examined, I think. Last night before retiring, I OK'd the SP2 install on my "good" machine (It's the best one I have). The one that feeds my family, you know, the one that if it's down PREVENTS ME from making a living.
I spent all day worrying (I was out on a job) whether or not the install was gonna hose my system, erase my data, you name it, I worried about it.
I saw others on this board (and other ones as well) say, sensibly, that they were going to wait and see what comes out of the first 4-6 weeks of user experiences before installing themselves.
What it comes down to is: I just can't resist an "upgrade" especially if it's a security related one.
I don't really know why it is, there is NO data on my machine that's not backed up securely and separately, and no one anywhere could find ANY data on my machine that points to any identity-theft risks, (besides, I enjoy the only REAL protection anyone can ever have against identity theft - No credit, no assets, no debt - in short, if anyone DID steal my identity, they'd soon be offering to pay me to take it back! Wink

)
Why is this sort of offering irresistable? I do know better, and should NOT have taken the plunge with this machine. Any amateur psychologists care to take a stab at this analysis? Send me a bill, I'll add it to the STACK I have left from last year Embarassed

the absolutely useless security centre now tells me my firewall status is "unknown" and offers no way to correct this manually that i can see - you can click on the option which rather unhelpfully tells you to "make sure your firewall is switched on" (no, really?!), and thats about all.....oh and i can almost hear it begging me to "activate the SP2 firewall, go on, you know you want to really...."

Apart from this small issue, ive had no major problems with it, except its increased my boot time.

I had someone download the network install for me. I did a clean install of xp sp2. However, after installing all my programs. I had a yellow mark in partmgr & Via Agp Bus filter devices. It did cause a blue screen of death-not always. What I did, was click on xp sp2 network install again it fixed it. I had no problems since then.

I installed from windows update and have had no problems at all. Really can't tell any differance at all. My son has had nothing but problems with his.

I installed SP2 it on two machines. (NOT at the same time, it's so much easier to fix a computer when you have a working one around : )

The first one, my desktop, had no problems. You'd never even know there was a change.

My laptop however could no longer access the internet. It connects via WiFi.

After reading online and testing (experimenting) I found that Microsoft XP's Wireless Zero Configuration service was not working with my WiFi card, a Netgear WT511. I stopped the Wireless Zero Configuration service and now I am having no problems accessing the internet.

No other problems so far.
