Hi:
I got a blue screen message upon trying to start my computer. When windows 7 tries to start, it goes to blue screen which says it won't boot because unmountable _boot_volume. It says to remove or properly install new hard or software and restart in safe mode. Upon starting, I have two options, F2 or F12 (boot modes). I pick F12 and it takes me to options and I pick the hard drive to boot. Then I can hit F8 to enter different boot modes including safe, safe with network or command prompt, enable boot logging, last know working configuration. Choosing any takes me to the next screen where what I picked is in blue and the only choices at the top is to start windows normally or in recovery console. Whatever I choose just takes me back to the original blue screen.

HELP!

Check to make sure you do not have a floppy disk in your floppy disk drive (if you have one), a cd/dvd in your optical drive (if you have one) or a USB drive plugged in.

If there is, then remove them and try booting again.

If you still can't boot your computer then please try the following ....

  • using another working computer download FRST to a USB flash drive.
  • If you are using a 64 bit version of Windows 7, download FRST64 to a USB flash drive.
  • Plug the USB drive into the infected machine.

Boot your computer into Recovery Environment

  • Restart the computer and press F8 repeatedly until the Advanced Options Menu appears.
  • Select Repair your computer.
  • Select Language and click Next
  • Enter password (if necessary) and click OK, you should now see the screen below ...

  • Select the Command Prompt option.
  • A command window will open.

    • Type notepad then hit Enter.
    • Notepad will open.

      • Click File > Open then select Computer.
      • Note down the drive letter for your USB Drive.
      • Close Notepad.

  • Back in the command window ....

    • For 32 bit version type e:/frst.exe and hit Enter (where e: is replaced by the drive letter for your USB drive)
    • For 64 bit version type e:/frst64.exe and hit Enter (where e: is replaced by the drive letter for your USB drive)
    • FRST will start to run.

      • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
      • Press Scan button.
      • When finished scanning it will make a log FRST.txt on the flash drive.

  • Close the command window.
  • Boot back into normal mode and post me the FRST.txt log please.

I'm sorry I can't do what you told me to. Upon turning on the computer and hitting F12 (boot menu) because Windows won't load, and it goes to blue screen as described above, it takes me to the Advanced Options Menu (after choosing hard drive from list of drives to pick from). These are the options it gives me:

Safe mode
Safe mode with either network prompt or commands
Enable boot logging
enable VGA mode
last know good configuration
Directory services restore mode (windows domain controllers only)
Debugging mode
Disable auto restart on system failure
Start windows normally
Reboot
Return to Operating System Choice Menu

It doesn't have a repair your computer choice and any I choose takes me to the Operating System Menu where the only options are:

Recovery console
Do not select this (debugging enabled)
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.

It says to push F8 for advanced options (taking me back to the previous page) and underneath is my choice from the Advanced menu in blue.

I can only scroll between the 3 options in the operating system menu and then it tries to boot windows and just goes back to blue screen. This is a circular pattern.

The other option on start up is F2 which is the start up options I believe. That requires a password.

You said you were running Windows 7, from the options you've posted it would seem you're running XP.

Which is it ?

In that case FRST is not going to help us, since it is only for use on Vista and Windows 7.

I need to know what the error code is when your computer blue screens.

Please note down exactly what is displayed on the blue screen, and post it in your next post please. If the screen does not stay open long enough for you to copy what is displayed, please do the following ....

1. Restart your computer, and as it starts hit F8 continuously to bring up the Advanced Options Menu
2. Select .... Disable auto restart on system failure .... and hit Enter

Restart your computer again, and this time it should stop at the blue screen, which should enable you to write down exactly what is displayed.

Ok, here is what the blue screen says...

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If the problem continues, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, Press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select safe mode.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x000000ED (0x857619E0, 0xC0000006,0x00000000, 0x00000000 )

Right before this happened, I kept getting a pop up from Advanced Optimizer which looked like a scanning program for viruses. I clicked on it to remove some programs and the blue screen happened next time I turned on my computer. I had removed this program once from my system I thought.

Let me know if you're able to boot your computer afterwards.

I got through the initial boot up from the CD. On the set up it says Windows XP Professional, but when I pressed R it took me to the Recovery Console page. When I got to the Microsoft Windows XP<TM> Recovery Console page, it would not let me enter a 1 like instructed in the performance instructions from the download site. At the end of the page it has C:\< instead of letting me enter a 1 which should then let this display happen. 1: C:\WINDOWS. No matter what I enter, this error comes up...
STOP: C0000139 Entry point not found. The procedure entry point NtSerializedboot could not be located in the dynamic link library. ntdll.dll.

On the initial download it says to download the professional version. Should I go back and use the Home Version since that's what my machine used?

Are you using your XP installation disk, or the disk created by ARCDC to boot into Recovery Console ?

If the latter, and there is an option to DL a package for XP Home, then use that, if not ....

If you get to the prompt with just C: then type in CD C:\Windows then hit Enter which should allow you to proceed with the chkdsk /r instruction.

I am using the ARCDC Artellos. I will switch to the Home edition and try that. I'll let you know.

Your blue screen error message has a few different causes, so this may or may not resolve the problem, but it's the most likely and the easiest for us to attempt to address, so let's hope you have more success with the XP Home option.

Well it didn't work. I downloaded the other version and had the same problem. When it came to the Recovery Console screen it has the command C:\>
It won't let me enter CD C:\Windows . I can't move the curser to the left to put in the CD part. HELP gets you to a list of word commands you can enter, like CHKDSK, FIXBOOT. etc. and none of these work. I get the error message that I posted before about the entry point not being found.

I had you guys fix my computer once before for some other stuff which changed a few display things on startup. Don't know if that is affecting this now or not.

Other ideas?

To be honest, unless we can get your computer to boot into Recovery Console, then there's not a lot we can do.

The error you are getting is described in the following MS article .... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555302

I think it's highly unlikely that your problems are as a result of an incorrect connector, or incorrect BIOS settings (unless you've recently altered them), so a corrupted File system is by far the most likely cause.

However to fix the corruption we need to be able to boot your machine from a recovery disk, and at the moment that does not seem to be possible. Quite why I'm not sure, it could be due to hardware problems.

My speciality is Malware removal, so it's possible that there may be other causes for your problem, however we're outside my area of expertise, so I think the best thing I can do is to point you in the direction of someone who may be able to help you better than I can.

Below are links to a number of forums that specialise in these kind of problems, and who may be able to resolve your problem .... they're in no order of preference, and all of them generally give high quality help.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum56.html
http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showforum=119
http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f299/
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/forum/5-windows-xp-2000-2003-nt/

I don't want you to think I'm abandoning you, and if you wish I can continue to try and find a solution for your problem, however I believe you probably have a better chance of recovery being helped by someone who specialises in boot problems.

Please let me know what you decide to do.
