My dad wants Black Ice uber bad on his computer, but I don't have any experience working with it and I hear it's a little on the advanced side of the spectrum for a firewall. Wouldn't Zone Alarm or something else work just the same? _________________ He who is not bold enough to be stared at from across

Blackice
Not only is it a pain to configure, but it really isn't a firewall. It's application filtering is not up to par with Zone alarm or any other software firewall. The worst thing is that a few years ago, they added to the program to get around failling Steve Gibson's tests instead of fixing the problem.

Eleven Months after the release of our first, simple, but effective and popular (4,340,641 downloads) LeakTest firewall testing utility, BlackICE Defender (BID) continues to "leak" — as defined by LeakTest. But a recent update to BID (version 2.9cai) was hiding this fact from its users by effectively cheating the LeakTest.
Rather than enhancing BlackICE Defender by adding the sort of application-level controls that are available even from many completely free personal firewalls, BID's publisher, NetworkICE, apparently chose to prevent LeakTest's intended operation by adding specific awareness to BID of LeakTest's remote testing IP.

So instead of admiting to the problem or attempting to fix it, Black Ice were being deceitful by working around the test. That workaround in turn was nothing but a smokescreen and was defeated by simply changing the IP address of the Leaktest:

| Shortly after we learned of and confirmed this unfortunate decision on the part of NetworkICE's developers, we updated the original LeakTest v1.0 to version 1.1 by simply changing LeakTest's remote connection IP and port number. With that small (two byte) change, LeakTest was again able to communicate out through BlackICE Defender's complete lack of defenses, as it always has — and as any other malicious hackerware or spyware presumably also could. |

In addition, others have had problems with Blackice as well:

| Well I tried to give BlackIce a fair test. But in just three days it cut it's own throat with me. It started by not allowing trusted apps. to run. Then the next day it was blocking the resident av scanner from working |

Add that it's $40 and you still need a real firewall to watch applications, especially on the outbound side, I see no reason for it. Oh, and they were dishonest about the leaktest by Steve Gibson. You would do better with Sygate or Kerio and having a go at the firewall rules. _________________ Nick's Security Ticker
