What (freebie) firewall would you recommend?
I was using Comodo which I really liked but for some reason it won't memorize any internet rules and it would interfer with the wireless internet connection variously.
Real annoying dunno why so I decided to give Filseclab a try. But do you think Filseclab is that great? I also used Zonealarm but not anymore.
Thanks. |

I would not specifically recommend any Firewall, as what suits me may not suit you, but here's a list of freebies.
Try them and see if any of them suit your needs.
It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time _________________ Gary R Administrator at Malware Removal University

Far be it from me to disagree with Gary R and he is also 100% correct in saying you can basically use one and only one software firewall at a time.
But I somewhat want to point out the a firewall choice is not something to be taken lightly. Because of all the basic components in a layered defense, I feel the firewall is the one layer that is hardest to get configured right, the one layer where you will have the most time invested in, and the learning curve is fairly steep for all of them. So even if you are talking about free firewalls, trying them all is an option but unless you value your time at zero, its not that attractive an option.
In my case I finally switched away from sygate 5.5---which played nice with my wired lan but kept crashing---and tried comodo---which is now up to ver 2.4.18.184---and was surprised on how easy it was to configure for my lan---in terms of the failure to learn---I agree---but do you know that comodo has a support forum?---there may be some rules you can add to get your wireless lan to work better.
I have also heard that the jetico free firewall is very good---and also heard it hard to configure.--various people here like the Kerio firewalls---and that zonealarm may be good but also may be bloatware. In terms of filseclab, I have no data---but if you are going to jump ship---I would do as much reading up as possible. |

I don't think I said anything about not taking time to research and learn about firewalls, or that they weren't important, just that I wouldn't recommend any particular brand.
The configuration and software installed on any computer is highly individual, and some firewalls will exist more harmoniously than others with some set ups.
It is impossible without knowing a great deal more about the posters habits and requirements just which firewall would suit his needs best.
The best way is for him to try out a few and select the one that suits his requirement best, this is not saying that he should not take time to learn how to configure them properly, but that is a whole new question, and one that wasn't asked in the original post. _________________ Gary R Administrator at Malware Removal University

| Dear Suzi:Why not? It is an answer that addresses the question quite well as far as I can tell.I learned an answer so I passed it on even if I post back so to speak it is still a more than adequate ability to reference as to the question. The question will have an answer in so far as its archive and historical significance is concerned,to this poster it does allow for some care and satisfaction. That reference was talked of elsewhere quite at length and was very interesting. The elsewhere was the smartcomputing.com forum whereby these topics as well can get really talked about. They are in fact more than interesting they are great topics and even enjoyable to respond to even if in fact they are late. Its gets a bit exciting to be able to move about like this with such valuable information and as well to learn to a greater degree as per the referred to web site and there testing protocol, very much like I read here not to long ago.I certainly can learn and would take seriously any recommendations that you would put forward. However this is a pleasure to address you like this and here is greetings and salutations. |

The original poster will not likely every see your post. If you have something you think is worthy of posting, you can start a new thread for it. That is preferable over dredging up a dead topic. _________________ Former Microsoft MVP 2005-2009, Consumer Security

were you using v.2.4 or v.3.0
3.0 is a drastic change for the good. with D+ it is amazing. it fixed the non-remembering rule bug. |

What freeby firewall do youall recommend seems timeless
did you find it from a search
if so
fair enough
have recommendations changed?
answers still seem topical to me |

If anything, comodo version 3 and online armor are anything but staid or predictable firewalls. And have vastly changed in only five months.
The initial release of comodo 3 was not ICS network usable, that and countless other problem have been fixed, and the same thing can be said of on line armor that has released about as many new versions as comodo has in that time period. On line armor still does not have a vista version but one is expected "soon."
In the recent Matousec leak tests both online armor and comodo 3
have emerged with 100% rating and with no one else anywhere close. And in a week's time the lead changed three times.
I agree with Suzi that an dead thread should not be revived, but since its awake now, might as well update the corpse on what is new. And lots of facts have changed in firewalls and very recently.
What we thought we knew has now changed. |
