I know this system has CommonName partially loaded. Windows Defender can see it but can't remove it. I can't kill off its two random-reverse-named processes (in this case aQwCAcBN.exe and NBcACwQa.exe). I can't delete its files or folder (C:\Program Files\vwqvswrp). Frustrating! Here's the log.

Hi and welcome,
You have yourself a nasty one.
If this CommonName is fully installed there is also a hidden driver that goes with it. Likely Winik
This might be a little difficult to removve.
I'm kinda new to Vista so please be patient with me. My primary PC is still XP.
What version of Vista is this please?
You have the Beta Version of Hijackthis.
Since it is still in beta I would rather not use it.
Please delete the Hijackthis you have now and grab this one:
Download Hijack This from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save the setup file on your desktop
Double click on it and by default it should install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This
Continue through the setup and have it create a desktop icon for you
Follow all the prompts, click Finish, and have it start Hijack This
Click the "Do a System Scan and Save a Log File" option
Save the log file and then it should open with Notepad.
keep Hijackthis open for next log.
Go to Edit, Select All and then Edit, Paste to paste the contents of the log here
Make sure you DO NOT fix anything with Hijack This yet. Most of the things in the log are normal or required.
Next log:
In open Hijackthis at bottom right click "config"
Click "misc tools"
Beside "generate startuplist log" Check the following items
"show also minor items (full)"
"Show empty sections (complete)"
Hit "generate startuplist log" and OK.

This is Windows Vista Ultimate, final shipping version, no beta.
There is definitely an entry for the malware in the startup list. It won't stay deleted. Here is the HJT (your preferred version) log followed by the startup log

Hi,
Vista Ultimate. Same as me
How do you like it?
Definately it is there.:
WinIK: System32\Drivers\WinIK.sys (system)
We'll have to do this manually since I havn't found any "for sure" tools that will deal with this on Vista.
First I need all the locations in registry for the driver.
Download Registry Search Tool from here:
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Its about 3/4 way down the page.
Unzip it, Open folder and double click it to run.
OK the UAC prompt.
In the search box provided type winik
Hit OK to search.
App dissapears to search & will pop up a messege when done.
Say OK to view in wordpad.
Copy/paste the contents here.
Run RegSrch again and this time search for vwqvswrp
Post results.

Hi,
Can I get you to try & zip up this folder:
C:\Program Files\vwqvswrp and upload it here please:
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?board=1.0
You will likely have to password protect the zip to get it past your antivirus. You may need to temporarily disable AV/AS to zip it.
At above forum start yourself a new topic.
In subject put "Requested by Blender"
In body include a link to this thread.
Include password to the file.
Hit the "browse" button, locate the zipped file you just made & hit "post"
It is normal you cannot see your file because only researchers are allowed to see files for download.
I'm going to have to test this thing before I walk you through removal.
I'm kinda interested in how this was allowed to install.
Did you by any chance shut off UAC? (User Account Control) To stop the warnings you get when trying to start programs or installing programs?
Thanks! _________________ Never give up!

OK, uploaded.
I did not turn off UAC, annoying as it may be.
Actually, I wanted a screenshot of a particular non-signature antimalware program preventing infection and I just grabbed the first thing that came to hand. Should've chosen some less *effective* malware... |

Hi,
I tested that thing and did find a tool that will take it out.
Download the tool described on this page:
http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=57153
Run it, OK the UAC prompt. Follow the prompts.
Computer will reboot 2x.
Actually it rebooted me 3x. 2nd time it didn't even get to the log-in screen. (this is normal since it does have to remove the protected driver very early in boot process)
When it's all done there will be log on your desktop. (WinKRootKit.txt)
Post that log along with:
New Hijackthis log
New registry searches using regsrch.vbs for winik and vwqvswrp
Let me know how the computer is running.
Thanks _________________ Never give up!

Hi again,
While waiting for me to come back & check your logs from above instructions; please install an antivirus program.
Windows Defender is not near enough.
Most likely could have prevented infection if you had AV installed.
Several Antivirus listed here:
http://vistabookmarks.blogspot.com/2007/02/vista-compatible-antivirus-software.html
Most offer a trial version. Avast & AVG have free versions.
Only install one or else you will have conflicts.
After installed, ensure it is up to date and run full system scan.
Let it quarentine what it sees.
Question:
Was this an upgrade install or clean install?
What did you mean by this?:

Hi,
Lotsa logs!
Couple of those errors you got with Hijackthis is because it isn't quite compatable with Vista. Has trouble getting some file/reg paths and Defender has your Hosts file locked so HJT can't read it.
I won't be using HJT to fix anything.
You get any errors running WinKRootkitRemover?
Not sure if the WinIK service re-installed or not. It may have since you posted.
I still see the CommonName exes running.
Disconnect from internet.
Disable your Windows Defender so it does not interfere.
Run WinKrootkitremoval tool again please.
OK the UAC prompt.
Let it do its thing.
Once restarted post new HJT log,
WinKRootkitremover log,
RegSrch logs for winik and vwqvswrp.
If no Driver is found, (tool will tell you and exit) proceed as follows:
Copy the following text to a new notepad file:
Make sure "wordwrap" is off.
Save as file name fix.reg
As file types: All Files (*)
Save it someplace handy.
| Code: |
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3408332175-4078688692-492787806-1000_Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\vwqvswrp]
[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3408332175-4078688692-492787806-1000\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\vwqvswrp]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"cUpGZwUw"=-
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"cUpGZwUw"=-
|
Boot to Safe mode. (tap f8 at boot)
Open your task manager and enable it to show tasks from all users.
OK UAC prompt if you get one.
End task these if listed:
baQwCAcBN.exe
NBcACwQa.exe
Click start> run> type regedit & hit enter.
OK UAC prompt.
Click "file"
Click "import"
Navigate to the fix.reg you saved earlier, hilight it and choose "open".
It should tell you success.
Exit regedit.
Locate:
C:\Program files\vwqvswrp and delete it.
Empty recycle bin.
Reboot back to normal mode
Post fresh hijackthis log and new RegSrch logs for winik and vwqvswrp
Let me know how machine is running.

OK, below you will find:
*WinKRootKitremover log
*HijackThis log
*search for winik
*search for vwqvswrp
I went into Safe Mode
I Checked for those two processes - they are *not* present
I merged FIX.REG with Registry
C:\Program files\vwqvswrp was not present
I emptied Recycle Bin
I Rebooted back to "unsafe" mode
*ANOTHER HJT log
*ANOTHER search for winik
*ANOTHER search for vwqvswrp
AND it seems that everything is clean and running smoothly!
Now to plug the network cable back in and *send* this...

Hi,
Your last couple HJT logs date back to the 22 of March. I failed to notice this.
Can you delete the hijackthis.log you have and create a fresh one please?
Alternatively; run "system scan only" and manually save the log with a different name.
Post results.
Your reg searches show the WinIK service is gone. WinKRootkitRemover log shows service not present.

So...we're almost there.
Just the Legacy WinIK keys left and those are gonna be a real bear to remove.
If that is in fact all that is left of WinIK the Legacies are not an immediate concern. However any A/S app you run is going to flag them every time and I'd just as soon get rid of them.
Problem is we as "users" don't "own" those registry keys. System does.
You can delete fix.reg
That lone entry left for vwqvswrp search is from PKZip history. Not a threat.
I'm working on those Legacies and will get back hopefully soon. _________________ Never give up!

I got rid of the LEGACY_WINIK keys by taking ownership and giving myself full control, then deleting them.
I didn't realize that HJT "classic" wasn't storing its logs in the same place as that original one from HJT 2.0 beta. So I've just been sending the same HJT log again and again, d'oh! Here is an up-to-date one. Looks like all is well.
BUT HEY! I *just* now created this log, and it says 3/22 (the date I downloaded "classic" HJT) regardless. So maybe I haen't been sending the same log over and over.

Hi,
Good to hear you got rid of those Legacies. I had trouble & needed another app to help.
Looks like it is the same log....
Scan saved at 12:04:40 PM, on 3/22/2007
Running processes:
C:\Program Files\vwqvswrp\aQwCAcBN.exe
Auto starts:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cUpGZwUw] C:\PROGRA~1\vwqvswrp\aQwCAcBN.exe
I'm not sure where your logs are saving to. if it is being saved to your hijackthis folder in program files....I don't think the old log can be overwritten. Heh! Now I know what is going on..
(we as users don't "own" program files folder therefore we can't easily make changes to it).
Saving a log file may seem trivial to us but without modify permissions even this is not possible.
Darn HJT is opening the same old unmodified log.
I tried to save a txt file there from another analysis app and I had to save it to my own profile folder. (C:\users\yourname )
My HJT is saved to a different folder where I have "full access" to and can therefore modify.
Isn't Vista fun?!
You don't see that process running if you open task manager & check "show processes for all users"?
Neither is that entry in registry?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
At the right: cUpGZwUw
Same location under HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Your last regSrch log was clean so I do believe you are OK.
You can delete that WinKRootkitRemover tool and the logs it created.
You may find RegSrch handy to keep.
System restore will have backed up infected files.
Purging your old restore points will get rid of infected files stored there.
Right click "computer" and hit "properties"
Click "system protection"
Under "Automatic restore points" Uncheck "Local Disk (C (system)"
Apply & OK changes.
REboot
Go back to "system protection" and turn on "Automatic Restore points" again.
A new restore point *should* be created.
I just wanna see a clean HJT log.
You still have Trend Micro's HJT?
Can you post a log from it please?
