I just tested it and my clean PC it gave me a few minor false posatives and 1 serious one: 31 registry entries and 1 file identified as belonging to istbar.

The user interface looks somewhat familiar but I'm not sure what other apps use it, and a look at screen shots on the famioly resemblances page showed nothing similar.

I checked the ad and can find nothing deceptive about it.

Yes, quite. Reminds me of goggle.com and other such related cons.

Hi All:

SpywareBot has been added to the Rogue/Suspect page.

The app's name, taken together with the text on the homepage and the fact that this company is targeting the terms "spybot" and "spybot search and destroy" heavily on Google means that this company is going out of its way to exploit consumer confusion over the name "Spybot Search & Destroy."

That behavior we will not tolerate.

They just don't know when they been defeated do they? Still trying to create thru deception and confusion they do some returns on those obvious sneaky efforts.

Good heads-up everyone.

Well pointed out Wyrmrider. Unfortunately you have to assume these hooks keep getting used because they catch enough ignorant fish to make it worthwhile for the sods with the rods... Wish we could do more than just get 'em on the rogue list.

(Mean mood: just found a virus on a cd of cleaning apps left for a friend by his last 'repairman'. Tomorrow have to try and clean the mess he left behind.) Mad

After some looking-around it would seem that Spywarebot is put out by the AdwareAlert people. Reasons being: Very similiar site designs, identical privacy policies, both affiliate pages link to cbadvance.com, and the apps have very similar interfaces, feel to them, etc. Pretty obvious.

So does this mean AdwareAlert gets re-classified as rogue?

Jefferson:

Thanks for making the connection. I knew I had seen that app before but couldn't put my finger on it. I'm going to add a note about that connection to the SpywareBot entry.

As for re-listing AdwareAlert itself, that's another matter entirely. Our problem with the SpywareBot app is the deliberate exploitation of confusion over names, not so much the app itself. If bad behavior from the company persists, though, AdwareAlert very well could be re-listed.

If there's any doubt about the connection between these 2 take a look at the "Testimonials" page.....they're exactly the same.

So- do we have the same management running both programs or did they sell a licence or "rent a coder"
are they running from the same server?
If so I say blacklist the management and anything connected with them
